Default Safe RPM?

2002 LM7 with LS1 cam/intake and ARP wavelock rod bolts. Any idea what kind of rev limit I should set?

if the rod bolt were installed right then you could go past 7K, but with that LS1 stock cam, i wouldnt roll past 6200. it also matters what valve springs you have, and what kind of lifters your running. if you only have the rod bolts, i would set the rev limiter to 6200, no reason to go any higher, power will just start to fall off

Springs and lifters are stock 5.3 stuff. 6200 it is. Thank you.

I've upgraded to PRC 5.3 heads with double springs, LS7 lifters, 224/228 112 cam and an LS6 intake/ported TB. I've bumped the limiter to 6500, but the engine doesn't seem to give up and I keep smacking the limiter. I'm assuming I need to go to 6800 or so, but I wanted to double check before spinning close to 7k.

Any reason I shouldn't go that high?

Depends on the efficiency of the heads and cam. My car's rev limited is set at 6700 hard cut. Because the ls6 prc stage 2.5 heads and 228r cams are done by 6300 rpms...

Not to mention that your valvetrain needs to be up to the task, it's only as good as re weakest link.

6200 is appropriate for a stock ls6 intake ls1.
Power is done by 6000 rpms when my vette was full boltons...

No matter the cam or the size of it or the heads, the LS6 intake will always peak at 6700-6800rpm. It's the design of the intake manifold and plenum volume that keeps it from building more HP past this RPM.

I would set the limiter 200-300rpm higher than where you shift.

So if you shift at 6500, set it at 6800.

I never though of the intake as a limiter like that. Good to know.

Thanks for the input. I'll let you know if I throw a rod or something

I doubt you will throw a rod at 6500rpm

I've turned 7400rpm with my stock bottom end with Katech rod bolts(which I would personally recommend over the ARP's) but due to my intake manifold(Fast 92/96) it didn't pick up any mph in the 1/8th over shifting it at 7200 so I shifted it there on motor and I shift it at 6800-6900 on nitrous now.

Pass in my signature was shifting at 7000-7100.
