Default Newb Questions about Ls1

Whats up guys? Got some questions for you about the ls1/ls6 stuff since im a ford guy. I have a 07 mustang thats cammed with a p1sc stage 2 procharger, and i know fords like the back of my head, but im trying to expand my knowledge to other vehicles and gain as much knowledge as i can with a variety of vehicles. I am currently in the process of selling the stang to a buddy of mine and im looking into a corvette. Now, i dont like the c5 z06's and the FRC's because of the rear window, i like how the pain ol' c5's look. IMO, the rear window and the targa top make the car. Anyway, i plan on getting a c5 targa top vette and i want to boost it. So my question is:

What is the max amount of HP that can be made with stock internals and stock block of a c5 corvette? and what is the safe point where it wont be a ticking time bomb and i can actually drive it without the worry of blowing something up?

Also, what is the max boost i can run with stock internals and block?

The answers to these questions will determine my choice in the next vehicle.

Have a very comfortable chair, and a full stomach, alot of coffee or beer and search alot of threads on this site! there's alot of information to be found, see what guys are doing to make gains, and where people have have failed..everything from putting free mods on your car and then swapping out to a better intake, exhaust, internal mods, weight reduction, transmission mods, suspension and gear changes..it can go on for days, weeks, years..if u want one complete answer to your post, it could go on for pages..
theres guys on here making any where from 300 to 800h.p.+ at the rear wheel..depends how much u have to spend/knowledge..knowledge comes from experience..search and learn my friend..

To many variables for me to give one simple answer to your question, your best bet is to try the search function in the forum and I know you will find all the info you need.

I agree with z28241, you just gotta read up on it...its all in here! The newbie tech section is great for learning about the LS1 and what it is capable of. With 6 bolt mains I am betting that the stock block can handle a fair amount of horsepower

What up PETE!?!?!

And thanks guys, yea ik ALOT about the 3v ford and ik ALOT about the potential for the 4v 5.0 that just came out. I feel like its more simple of an answer for ford (ie. on a stock 3v block, it can hold max of 500rwhp and 12psi, on a stock 4v 5.0 it can hold a max of 720rwhp and 12psi). I guess thats due to years of being on that forum, but it felt like the answer came very quickly for me. On these forums, ive notice alot of people doing N/A setups, or Nitrous setups. If i got a Corvette id want to either Twin Screw it or Procharge it. Nitrous scares me and i dont like being n/a.

From what ive heard, the ls1/ls6's can get to 600rwhp very easily. Id like to just be able to strap on a full exhaust, supercharger, some nice wheels, and lower it and call it a day at 600rwhp. If that can be attained without the threat of my motor being a ticking time bomb, then ill buy a corvette. If not, im buying a new 5.0.

Okay lil better ..narrowing down to your needs...do want 600 rwhp for braggin rights or are you going to drag race it?..FYI you are going to need more than full exhaust for 600rwhp..however u wrote about a adding power thru a blower of sorts...u should do accomadating mods such as a blower cam/heads and headers/exhaust
whats ur transmission? A4 or M6?

id like 600-650rwhp for a street toy, just to dick around, brake it loose at 65 whenever i want, ya know, for fun. And ik that, i think i said a blower in the last post but i may be too tired and just thought i said it. Anyway, id like to do a full exhaust, a supercharger (either a Twin Screw, or Procharger) and supporting fuel mods. If i can do that on a stock block without having to replace the internals and without worry of detination. id be so happy

If you're wanting to know about boost on stock internals, check out the forced induction section... but I bet you'll definitely like the LS1 better than the 5.0!

The bottom ends can take a ton of power. I think the "safe" limit for stock pistons would be 550rwhp but people pass that limit all the time without much issue.

If I wanted a 600 - 650 rwhp procharged vette, I would make sure the motor is built for it.

Peace of mind.

I've read a good bit here and elsewhere and the 500-550 number comes up a lot as the safety tipping point for stock internals except crank which is much higher.

the pistons is really your limit on the LS1, they seem to start to let go after 550rwhp, some times they last longer, sometimes they dont. if you wanted 600+rwhp, then throw some forged pistons in there, with full seal rings, and then you should be good to go.

if pistons are the only problem, ill do the pistons, and since you gotta do alot of tearing apart to change the cams, ill do that while im at it too. They dont sell the ms4 anymore do they?

Yup Texas Speed sells them daily! But you might want to look at something with s little wider lsa to help hold your boost in

If your ok with changing the pistons, I would also change the cam (easy) and the rod bolts while your in there, and get some ported heads (or get yours ported).

Also going to need to make sure you atleast have an LS6 intake manifold.

i believe texas speed offers a complete cam package.

If i remember correctly, I can get Timing chains, pushrods, the cam, and springs all from texas speed. Thats all i need to do cam swap right? because with the 3v ford its just change cam, phaser bolt, and put a phaser limiter and done.

Do i need to do ported heads with the ms4 cams?
