Default Looking to Refresh and Upgrade My LS1, Questions......

I'd like to do a Stage 2.5 head/cam setup from Texas Speed and though while I'm at it I'll replace the piston rings, bearing, and bearings. It will stay a NA head/cammed LS1 so would it be beneficial at all to replace said parts with anything other than OEM parts? If so, what do you suggest and why?

Cost of buying all of those parts- dissamble/assemble, gasket kit... blah, blah...

vs.

buying a longblock ls1 or ls6. take out the cam/stock heads reassemble with better heads/cam.

Is this a track car? DD? both? weigh out the pros and cons.

It's just a street toy really. It will probably never see the track, but it's not a daily driver either. Something fun to drive 1-3 times a week.

Can I ask why you are wanting to rebuild it? Low oil pressure? Smoking? If it's just for piece of mind these things will pretty much live forever. (outside of the occasional mishap.

The onyl reason I thought about it is I figured since I was thinking about replacing the cam and adding ported heads I might as well refresh stuff. It has 118K on it which really isn't much for LS1s I guess but figured while I had it "apart" what the hey.

swapping a cam and heads is one thing but replacing everything else is another.

As long as you didn't run your LS1 w/ low oil or no oil/ no oil pressure/ no coolant or any broken mechanical part inside, I'd just swap the cam and heads. Of course with supporting mods on hand such as OP, trunions for stock rockers, hardened PRs, better valve springs, and most of all a tune.

If you want to get your compression up you might want to invest in some pistons with reliefs. Or you can just do some flycutting on your stock pistons. Either way that will allow you to get your chambers down to 59cc and run a .040 cometic gasket to get your quench right.

Nah, it still runs like a raped ape (well, as much as one with 356rwhp/428rwtq can). Never had any internal issues with it. When I get the heads and cam I'll go ahead and get a ported LS6 oil pump as well.

If I mess with the pistons I'll probably replace them. If it's really not necessary though I won't.

i had 135000 miles on my bottom end when i did my heads/cam swap. just make sure you check the compression before tearing it apart, if all is good then go ahead and tear into it!
