Default Cam suggestions

Hello,

I am looking for suggestions as to a mild cam that is "streetable" and will work well for my summertime daily driver, but able to put down good numbers (target 400 rwhp with 1/4 mile times in the lower 12s after a tune). I am a little worried about the stock rear, but since I have street tires and don't drive too roughly I am hoping it will last. All suggestions and comments welcome! Thanks in advance!

My current setup:
02 z28 (M6 car w/ ~20k miles)
American Racing LT Headers + ORY (1 7/8" primaries to 3")
Magnaflow Catback
RRP Electric Cutout
P&P Throttle Body, !AIR, TB bypass
SLP "FloPac" CAI
SLP Strut Tower Brace
UMI on car adjustable LCAs (poly / roto-joint)
UMI adjustable panhard bar (poly / poly)
OEM C5 "thinline" wheels w/ Kumho Ecstas

Soon:
Cam (looking for specs and vendor)
Tune (looking near/in Metro-Detroit, MI)
New rotors and powdercoated calipers
Shocks?

I would definitely consider the TSP 228 cam. Very popular choice for a street friendly, and daily driver setup. You should make close to 400 rwhp with this cam.

Cam Motion 228/232, TSP 228R, Thunder TR228 or TR230.....something along those lines. I would suggest a 4.10 rear gear swap for added fun and drive-ability.

thanks for the suggestions, when I asked TSP a month back or so for input they suggested:

1 - TSP Torquer V3 231/234 .643/.598 111
2 - PRC .650' Dual Spring Kit complete with seats, seals, and retainers
3 - Texas Speed & Performance 7.40 Chromemoly Pushrod
4 - LS6PortedPump Texas Speed & Performance Ported & Shimmed LS6 Oil Pump 5 - GM Oil Pump O-Ring for LS1/LS6
6 - In Motion LS1 Single Roller Timing Set w/ Torrington Bearing

totaling just over a grand. When I asked more about why he had chosen those specs considering from what I have read how aggressive those were, I never received an answer.

I may be willing to do heads at the same time since I will be tearing into the block anyway... what kind of reliability issues will I be looking at with either the cam or head/cam setup and would you expect my rear end to last? The rear is my greatest concern after doing my research on here over the past year. My other thought is that the single 3" exhaust will restrict the head/cam setup anyway.

It shuld be very reliable if u do everything the right way and ur exhaust shouldnt be restricting as long as ur cutout is not to far behind the lt's. The rearend will ebentuall break if your launching hard on sticky tires, but if u stay away from launching hard it should be completely fine. I recomend the same ones as redss recomended plus the tourquer v2. The high lift on the v3 just makes me not like it lOl

The cutout is located just after dip in the floorpan at the feet of the rear right passengers seat. In other words, just after the ORY in the first couple feet of the catback.

Also, this may be a dumb question, but where and what in the rear is most likely to break? In all that I have heard about them breaking, it was never mentioned what specifically was the problem.

TSP really likes to recommend their Torquer V3 cam. The guy from TSP I talked to actually said he doesn't ever sell the v2 and said the V3 is strictly its replacement. However for a street car I would go with a 224 or 228R. The horsepower difference between the cams will be minimal. (It will be a drivers race) And you will be much more happy with the car. Make sure you get a good in-car tune. The tune is going to make or break any setup.

Still waiting to hear back from TSP... so far I am leaning towards the ported ls6 heads with a Torquer V3. Anyone know of any numbers that setup might hit?

What kind of problems can I expect from the clutch?

Stock clutch? It will not like the new power at all.

Yes it is. I guess the only thing going for me is that it has less than 21k miles... Do you think it will hold for any time at all, or should I just count on replacing the clutch at the same time? If I am looking at a twin disc since its meant to be a daily driver, what brand/model would you recommend?

single will do it...unless you got the dough for the twin. I would not run over 3:73 gear for a daily, my 3:42 are perfect IMO. 3:73 was better for rolls, but I was shifting a lot while driving normally. 4:10 are really not necassary unless you go with a Trex or something. Torquer 3 is a great cam. cam motion 232-236, just because I wanna see what results you will get with it so I can buy it after

Don't be scared to go out on a limb. I trusted a Cam Motion cam suggestion from a very highly recommended LS shop. I knew mine was about the specs I wanted but I had not pinpointed which exact cam i was going to buy. I went with Cam Motion without ever hearing of anything around here of them. So far I'm very pleased. Hoping for a new P.B. at the track this Friday. I think in cool weather I will be about weight reduction off the top 20 fastest cam only list. I will never do the weight reduction so i will never make the list but its damn nice being so close. Proves the combo is everything I wanted it to be.

Honestly our Level 1 will hold the power of a cam-only setup as it's good to 450rwhp. You could free up ~10hp with the light weight flywheel, but it will be a little trickier to launch at the dragstrip being that it has less MOI. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Chris, 817-750-2000

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have to look into Cam Motion. I am certainly not opposed. Who would you recommend here for specs?

As far as the monster clutch, how does the level 1 or 2 clutch compare to the stock clutch? I am thinking level 2 since I will likely get heads and will continue modding. Still like the idea of a twin disc after hearing how they maintain great street manners, especially after being stuck in traffic for a dd.

There is no need for a twin disc at your power level and the Level 2 is very similar in engagement as the Level 1 being a full face disc as well. The Level 2 will give you more room to grow and get your NA plans taken care of while being just fine for daily driving.
