What do you recommend if the motor is out of the car? Just bought a 6.0 and tore it down. pistons look pretty coated.

brake cleaner works awesome. I just put heads on my shortblock last week, but before I did, I attempted to use scotch bright pads alone--which sucked. I then used a shop rag soaked in brake cleaner and it took the carbon off like it wasn't even there.

Ditto on the brake cleaner and rag. Did this yesterday and it worked awesome. A few mins per cylinder and alittle longer for the stubborn ones.

Scotch-Brite Red or Green and a can of WD-40 works perfect. Then a Brake Clean wipe down and your good to go.

The WD-40 acts as a lubricant and the pads gets the majority off the crap off and the B/C just gets the surface perfect.

Yeah I need something stronger than brake cleaner/WD 40 or tougher than a scotch brite pad. it cleaned up the pistons some but some of that stuff is caked on top.

i just bring the piston up to TDC and use a sharp razor blade. comes off easy. if you have a dome or dish then it wont work.

I give you props for using a wire brush, you have got to have a steady hand. I have been using Rolocs on my car for a while. Got a tip at work (USMC Aviation) our Airframes shop put me on to them in 2009. I have seen some of the junior guys sanding on some very exspensive aluminum with a Roloc for what must have been hours without damaging it one bit! After I saw those knuckle heads do that I was hooked on how forgiving they are.

Install Alcohol injection kit. Your pistons and heads will be clean like new from now on. And you can bump timing and pick up some HP.
