Default Other things to do when doing a cam install?

So Ive been reading a pretty good bit about doing a cam in the formula. From what ive read when doing a decent size cam you need to do valve springs, retainers, and push rods. Ive also read that you should do a LS2 timing chain and a ported LS6 oil pump when doing the cam. Would it not hurt to do a water pump as well? If so what kind of water pump? Stocker or some sort of aftermarket?

LS2 water pump. Also, get the Melling 296 oil pump. Skip the ported LS6. I also had my rockers rebuilt by Harland Sharp.

Ok cool thanks for the info. Just making sure I have everything I need. As far as the cam goes im kinda torn between the Tr224/224 or the Trex. Ls1's are new too me as I just got the car recently. Im looking to put down 400whp or more if possible with just a cam and bolt ons. Its a 6 speed car.

Don't be shy with cam. We did a friends car, and with ported and milled crappy 98 heads and a Futral cam along the lines of 232/232 112+4 .600/.600 and put down 410hp with something like 140k miles on the short block.

Drove perfectly fine as a dd.

I didn't do the water pump. But it's a great time to put in a new thermostat while the pump is off.

I will disagree. LS2 chain is fine. Also, messing with rod caps can invite trouble as I have read...... Lifters should be fine if motor was well maintained....

My requirements to do a cam job were cam, chain, oil pump, gasket set, and beer. Lol

I like to do upgraded injectors, LS2 timing set, and a Melling 10295 high pressure pump.

Agreed, but skip Melling 295 and get the 296. You can run the lower pressure spring.....I run the high pressure and haven't had any problems....

Depends on goals. I am pushing upper 400's on 42# racetronixs. I almost wish I went 60's, but my next upgrades will hopefully need more than that....

He will be fine with the stock injectors at that power level. Don't worry about pulling the heads to change the lifters either.
