From what I have found they will make decent power just not quite as much as a 243/799. I also have a 98 and am considering having my 806 heads ported that way I don't have to source valve covers and coil brackets. If it were just the added cost of the heads it might be worth the 10 - 15 hp but after you add in the cost of the other stuff needed to run them I am leaning towards porting the 806s

It will completely depend on how much money you're going to spend in having them ported. If you're going to take them to some, "local porter who has done tons of old SBC heads, but never touched an LS head," and is going to charge you $1800 run away. There's lots of reputable head porters on here with good results. Search around for what you're looking to do.

IMO a fresh vj, mill. Get a proven stock cathedral port cam with supporting bolt ons and tune. Should have no prob breakin 400rw . Thunder racing has proven cams to work with stock heads. Or just get some stock 243/799 heads instead with vj and mill. Buy the covers too

i have a set of 806 heads myself that i need to pick up still from the machine shop. i picked them up cheap off a buddy and they were already ported and polished. i dropped them off at local shop for milling and a valve job and replace 4 bent valves. total for the heads AND work is about $500. they put down 425 +/- a few paired with a F13 cam. im expecting to hit 450ish.
id say if the work is cheap do it. otherwise AI heads kick A$$!!

I did my own. It's not a big deal. There was so much casting flash inside the runners, chambers, bowls, that removal of this alone has to be helpful.
A dremel with sanding drums will remove the flash in no time. Afterward, everything was sandpapered, then polished with the dremel.
I wasn't looking to make large alterations, just common sense changes.
A valvejob was also done.
The car goes fast (for me), and it will be tuned soon.
See pics in Camaro Build.

I did this with LS6 valves and my car seems stock and always seems to leave people scratching their heads how much power it puts down.
are cnc'd heads like AI's worth it... most definetely but not everyone needs to go that extra mile.

Ported 806 heads can get you to the 400 hp mark with no trouble. My old H/C setup had ported & milled 806s, a G5X2, LS6 intake, 1 3/4 headers, and Lanes true duals and made 411hp (don't remember tq) through my 3500 stall.

Once you start porting an 806 head the only difference is the fact that it is a perimeter bolt head. The runners are exactly the same, but have a different casting process. A ported 806 head will get you the same results as a ported 241. I actually used to have a set of CNC ported 806 heads that Katech did. I ended up selling them, but would have like to use them (70cc chambers) instead of 317s on a small single turbo build.
