I did exactly what you want to do, LS6 heads on a stock bottom end / cam. HP went up but so did gas mileage! Which rocked...
However, it would have taken me only an hour or so to do a cam swap while doing the heads so I wish I had done that.
I'm doing that now, and ripping the heads off anyway so I should have done it all at once.

Not a big deal, just doing it to freshen up the top end for now. Going to be putting a new bottom end in probably next year and go turbo, ill have them worked and get a nice cam to compliment them then.

So can anyone tell me who has done this does it need to be tuned or no? Obviously a tune will help I am aware of that but seeing as its not really as drastic as putting in a monster cam and all. Should I expect any idle issues or lean/rich problems on the stock tune or should the sensors compensate enough?

Please dont waste your time on this.... I did this many years ago, and with bolt ons and ported 243 heads dynoed 300 rwhp on a 2004 ls1 gto. About 4000 miles later, i put in a tsp 224r cam andvthe nextvtime itvwas dynoed, it put down 393.... the cam isvyour bang for the buck. NEVER heads before cam. Learn from my experience.

with hi mileage replace the complete valve train.do a DIY valve seat leak test.consider a thunder racing cam pkg,the tr224 is a great cam .get a cam swap kit from TSP with a ls2 chain.

Why would I bother with that with my plans for next yr, and the heads im looking at are not high mileage. They have around 20k on them. If I buy a brand new cam it will be next year AFTER I do the turbo and would be after I work the heads IF I decide to bother with it. All depends on if im happy with the setup power wise with just the turbo. I'm pretty familiar with most the cams out there, the TR224 is great for a dd setup but wouldnt be best for the route im going.

You are correct it had the 241's NOT the 243's. I had to get them off the shelf and take a look last night! I bought it new of the show room floor so everything that has ever been done has been done by myself!! Thank God!

Your title asks if it is worth it... Which implies you are asking if it would be worth your time to do... Which implies you are undecided as to whether or not you are going to install said heads![Nut swinger](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/nutswinger.gif)

As for the install I'll do them myself this time. Didnt last time because had never done it, and it was kinda a DD so couldnt risk screwing it up, didnt want to be rebuilding it every yr like you are stuck doing

I guess my next question would be If I do the 02-03 Z-06 Cam with the heads it as well, do I need to change the push rods to a different length as well and if so anyone know the size off hand for this combo? I seen when I was searching that when people do just that cam they need a longer pushrod because of the smaller base circle of the cam. Not sure if this applies to the 243 heads as well, have not had time to search around yet.
