Default CAM install at 185K miles?

Ok so im probably going to upgrade my heads to ported 243's and replace the springs with PAC 1218 and maybe some scorpian rockers and new lifters as well. I wanted to install a 228R cam from TSP and put in a 3200 stall. Would it be a good idea to do the cam or is the motor in the RISK area for the cam?

I'm in the same boat partner lol.... except I have 225K.

Looking at same ported 243 and TSP 224-228 cam. I think I've about decided to do it with some other precautionary revamping (new lifters/trays, timing chain, oil pump).

Look forward to hearing other advice.

There have been a lot of threads about cam installs on high-mileage motors. But if I had enough parts off the car to swap heads and change the stall, I would not be able to resist upgrading the internals of the short block.

My brothers 99 z28 just rolled 200k, i installed the 228r @ around 180k-ish. Its got a 4000 stall and long tubes.. He just dropped it off for a ls6 intake install this weekend. Still has good oil pressure and runs great

anyone who has had a high mileage running short block apart knows the answer to this. however, if it were me, i'd leave it alone.

So pretty much its hit or miss with the high mileage, so it would defintly be a good idea to have an LQ4/9 on stand by to build up when something gooes wrong lol

I get worried because I see plenty of thrown rod/spun bearing topics.

I'm very easy on my car and so far so good, but still I worry.

no quite as many miles but i did a tr230 at 143k miles and have put around 10k on it since. what a great mod only regret was not doing it sooner. heads are in the future as long as compression numbers are good enough.

I did a bigger cam in my car with 185K and only took about 350 miles to spin a bearing on #6. I just picked up a 2000 engine with 83K. :-)

Im about to lay a set of Dart Heads and a Futral F14 High Lift Cam at 180k.

Also going to put on a set of Katech rod bolts while im there and replace the lifters with the LS7 pumpers.

Ohh im also going to hit it with some giggle gas. We'll see what happens.......

The miles are highway miles

I'm doing LS6 heads and 02 LS6 cam over the winter on my 98 which has 147k. Its mostly all highway miles and still has 60+psi of oil pressure when I jump on it and never less then 38 at hot idle and thats with mobil 1 5-w30 so I am assuming its in good shape. I have also heard putting a fresh top end on a worn bottom can cause problems but I think it comes down to how its been maintained and treated. I also see a lot of spun bearing threads and half of them seem to be shortly after people change the rod bolts.....after talking to a speed shop about this I have come to the understanding that while it can be done its not the "right way" to do it and can cause pre mature failure. As for personal experience I can say this, Years back I had a 98Z I bought with 20k on the clock...I was young and dumb and beat the sh*t out of it lol, it was a bolt on car with a 125 dry shot from about 50k miles to 130k. At that time I bought another and sold that one to a buddy of mine. At 140k he put in the MS3 cam with supporting valvetrain mods and continued to spray it again 125 dry kit. Sold the car later with 168k STILL running pretty strong. Was starting to smoke just a little at WOT though. Also for what its worth I ALWAYS ran mobil 1 or Royal Purple oil and was constant on 3K intervals.

OK so think about it ....seriously,I did mine and I'm happy with it. I did it for the ability to continue to drive my car. It's my DD and I just like driving the car, period. If you THINK you can put a Top end on a car that has a Ton of miles on it and then go out and beat the **** out of it..I want to to go stand in front of a Mirror look at your own eyeballs and think about this. People every day take a perfectly Good Low mileage motor and beat the **** out of it and spin bearings..huh? It's like an OLD Mule, it can still do the job but it's too old to kick you and too tired to run away. lol lol The LS is the best Chevy has ever had but.............

If it were me I would be inclined to stick all that cash towards funds for a 347 shortblock from Texas Speed or something similar.
