1998 camaro z28 ls1 knocking
my oil pressure is 35-38psi at warm idle. if your standing in front of the car you do not hear the knocking, or if the hood is open. you can only hear it on the side of the car and it is coming from the underside. i can not find out what it is but i was told to take off the oil pan and check the bearings. im not sure what to do i am open for suggestions, the oil level is normal, normal pressure.this kncoking doesnt sound good but i was also wonderig if i should just get a basic rebuild, which cost 1,000.

Id venture to bet that if you cant hear it with the hood open then its not a rod knocking. Is the car an auto or manual? If its an auto it might be loose converter bolt or bolts. Also might be a cracked flywheel, they sound almost identical to rod knocking. GL, post back results...

Pulleys don't knock, so it's not that. And it is serious, normal engines don't knock (as much as GM will try to tell you).
Could be a lifter(s), bent pushrod(s), spun bearing(s) or piston slap.
And wtf is this $1000 rebuild? Don't just throw money at random parts and hope it makes the noise go away. Find out what the problem is specifically and fix that.

How long has it been doing this?
if you had a rod bearing problem you would be locked up after a very short period of time.
rod bearings sound AWFUL. A clanking/knocking with a metallic squeal/squeak mixed in. It sounds like something SERIOUSLY wrong. (and.. it is so it should..)
my car makes ALL KINDS of noises, but only when cold. I can hear them through the firewall with the windows up.
Certainly post that video tho, that'll be your best bet I think.
if you're bored in the mean time, doesn't sound like it'd hurt to drop the dust shield on the tranny and shine a flaslight up in there where the TC connects to the flexplate and see if you got anything amiss. Never had that problem before, but it's free and fairly easy.
