Default valve spring selection

I think after all the research, I am going to go with the proven TSP 228R cam on my LS1 build. Now comes springs. with only .588 of lift, I have read more than once that you do not want to go overkill. I am looking at the PAC 1218 or the patriot gold duals. Both seem to have good reputations and with the patriots I get the titanium retainers. Is this one of those either one is good to go situations?

There is no need for a dual spring on that cam.

I run 918s on cams like these all the time. No need to buy retainers. The stock ones work fine, and if you want to upgrade Comp makes the lightweight tool steel retainers that only weigh 1-2g more than Ti, but wont wear away like Ti does.

Amen on the 918 springs. too many people overspring their motors. Just takes more hp to overcome that extra, unneeded pressure. Not to mention its harder on the cam, rockers, pushrods, and timing chain.

well if you just want a double spring, I would suggest the comp 926. Its not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

But just like sweets10 stated, you dont really need a dual for that cam.

If you are looking for a beehive we do have the RPM series we are releasing for 2012 (have the 1218X's now). Its similar specs to the 1200 seires but has a different heat treat and gets polished goes through multiple stages of nano-peening. So far in house testing has been awesome on them. They are a budget price in between our standard 1200 series and 1500 series springs. Get used to the new 1218X,1219X and so forth we are confident they will take over all other beehives!

Vengeance uses the TEA Dual golds w/ a similar cam. I Pm'd him about it asking this question among others:

TEA springs are definetly not over kill. We use these on most all of our cam installs unless they are extreme enough to need a more extensive setup.

Would the TEA dual springs be overkill? It is a DD and see's a lot of highway miles.

We do use TEA dual golds on most builds. They are a great quality dual spring at an awesome deal.

$229 for a set with Tool Steel Retainers and $329 for a set with TI retainers.

I would use the PAC beehive springs myself, unless aftermarket rockers are going to be used.
