Ls1 block machining question?
Hi all,
Took my 2002 5.7 block to the machine shop today and was told a price for honing the bores for the new pistons and checking crank balance, etc.
Pistons are wiseco 3.903"
spoke to another person as the guy i spoke to originally wasn't there and they said it would need to be bored and honed, is this right? or do they just need to be honed?
Machining's not really my forte so leave it to the experts in that field.
Also was told will need line boring i think it is with the new main studs, etc. is this for added strength? or did i miss understand what part line boring is used for?
if any one can help with the answers or what line boring etc is for this would help, thanks.

Line boring is usually only need if an engine has spun a main bearing and tore
up the saddle. Line honing is used when switching main cap fasteners which
tend to register slightly different (shift the cap). Most engine rebuilds get
bored and honed however, the LS1 being aluminum has iron cylinder liners
(sleeves). These can only be honed from 3.898 to 3.903, 3.905, or 3.908

oh ok, yeh switching main cap fasteners, putting new ones in so line honing would be required.
ok so boring isn't required just honing of the cylinder liners.
i'll will query them on it when i ring up on Monday or Tuesday as i may use ARP main stud fasteners instead of factory.
Thanks that clears up a bit.

Yea, you don't really set up the boring machine to take off 0.005" The hone will do that easy. When shop bores a engine to say 0.030" over the usually bore it first to something like 0.025" over then strap on the torque plate and hone the last 0.005" to the correct finish/piston clearance.

yeh that's what i thought, got to drop some other parts in this week, that they can check the balance on while they check the crank, mainly balancer and torque plate, so will being going down in my work uniform, might help when they see i'm in the same trade.
Haven't heard anyone mention boring a ls motor before only honing and the guy i spoke to first time never mentioned boring they said that will just be a hone then, so will try to speak to the guy i spoke to first (he doesn't work weekends).
thought id double check before i go down saying it doesn't need boring.
Thanks for your help.
