lifter tick/piston slap???!!
Since ive gotten the car way back with 30,000 miles on it, its always had this lifter tick or maybe piston slap to it? its a summer cruise car and ive been driving this week due to my DD having a blown brake line.. Stating the car up in the mornings around 8am (50*f) this thing sounds like a diesel or its eating rocks. Its pretty aggressive until it gets pretty hot.
Ive used mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 since ive gotten it. On the last change ive used a quart of the lucas oil additive with no help what so ever in the sound.
The power is there, no codes, doesn't burn oil or leak or anything..
Any ideas? Would a quick movie help out some? I honestly cant tell where the sound is coming from but its getting annoying. Hopefully be building up the motor with the next 3 years, so i guess if its the lifters ill just deal with it until then. ????

Ya mine sounds just like how you described yours, I've been told it's a piston slap but you never know these engines make alot of noises. Mine has 47k miles and I put maybe 4k miles on it a year. I think I'm ready to move to a different ls motor because I literally cannot stand to hear my car start up anymore. It's embarrassing when I show people my car and start it up and it sounds like **** until warmed up. I just hope it doesn't affect me when I try to sell it.

Im thinking of running a quart of trans fluid in the oil for a week and seeing what happens right before i change it again.. Trans fluid is very high in detergents and cleaning. idk if i want to take that big jump yet
My brothers ls1 with 30,000 on it doesnt make a damn sound besides a pulley squeak.
idont get it

not sure what its sounds like exactly but if you say it sounds like rocks in a ice cream maker or like its eating rocks,,, i had a truck that sounded like that turned out it was rod knock. im not saying that is your problem but i would suggest doing some research into Rod knock and see if that might be your problem. just my 2 cents, good luck

Maybe rocks was a bit powerful lol It all depends on the rpm range that the engine is in. When around 700 idle, cant hear a thing. from 800 to say 2300, you can really hear it.
JRENIGAR- how long should i run the ATF in it before the next oil change or do you always run ATF with the oil? I knew someone would chime in with the ATF trick lol thanks!

My 02 Z28 started a very making a mild tap after starting when cold at about 100,000 miles. I have read that LS-1's tend to do this, especially with mileage. The slap goes away after 15 seconds or so. You may have another problem if it is loud or sounds like rocks. Sending a oil sample to be tested might be a good thing for you. The testers can usually tell what type of metal is being removed, which will point you in the right direction for investigation or repair.

my 98 z28 has 185,000k it always had a piston slap but only in the winter time 30-40 freakin cold outside. gm said that 97-99 had that problem. still runs strong 8.5 84mph @ 1/8 with a lid, borla c.b i dont use mobil 1 at all.i had the car when it had 98,000k the only thing that did broke was the 10 bolt and the 4l60e. the motor still runs like a raped ape

If it goes away after it's warmed up, you can bet the farm it's piston slap. Say "thank you" GM for building this wonderful feature and not standing behind it. Google for all the law suits, issues, etc. That's why later versions have coated pistons and much tighter tolerances. My 01 sounds horrible cold...perfect warm. My son's 05 LS6 is quiet as a mouse. It uses the upgraded pistons and clearances.
As long as you warm it up, there should be no negative effect. But it sure can be embarrassing and you CAN hurt it if you stand on it before it warms up.
