Default Cam Advise

I am about to put a new cam in a 2002 SS. I have no experience at all in dealing with cam specs, and I have read every cam sticky on every LS1 site, so please don't point me to one.

I know that choosing a cam based on "sound" is not going to be your best option, however, at this point in time, I'm not looking for what can get me the greatest HP gains. I barely get out of 4th gear on a normal basis, but I need a beastly **** idle.

From what I am understanding, the LSA contributes a lot to the choppy "'69" sound. I am still somewhat clueless on which LSA's would be more choppy and what the LSA would mean compared to the other specs of the cam.

I am only planning on changing the springs with the swap, so I guess my question concerns having the choppiest idle with only buying new springs.

I am also a big fan of LPE, so any LPE cam advise would be much appreciated.

not sure on LPE cams, but you need to change the push rods when you upgrade the springs. they are not strong enough and will bend over time.
if you want an LPE cam call em up. never dealt with them but im sure they can point you in the direction.

Another important thing to remember is...the tighter the LSA the harder it is to tune.
Do you plan on getting a higher stall torque converter??

Have you checked You Tube?? There are a lot of vid's there to give you a good idea on how various cam specs sound.
I don't think I would go over mid 220's for .050 duration. Something in the range of a StreetSweeper HT may interest you...but, even that may be on the high side for duration. A custom cam from Pat G is always a good choice.

hah, I've probably watched every video on youtube and still can't decided.

112 LSA is choppier/muscly than 114 LSA?????????????

111 or 112 lsa, lots of overlap will give you the aggressive idle, id stay away from a 114 lsa,

Comp Cams Thumped cam. 219/236 on a 109 LSA. It sounds like it eats puppies and small children, but doesn't make insane power. They are cut for the sound they make. Check Thunder Racing.

Those thumper cams will definitely fit the bill for what you are after. They sound tuff. If you are going for sound, and you don't choose the thumper, get something on 110 LSA and 226 - 228 intake duration. Here is a sound clip of my recent cam swap. It is 226/234 on 110 LSA:

Assuming this car is A4 and the motor is ALL stock with a few bolt ons, it's hard to go wrong with a TR224 on a 112 or something in that range.
