Question Choosing a Cam

I'm in the process of choosing a cam for my 01 SS (A4). By the time the cam is installed I will have just about every bolt on out there (LT's, asp pulley, whisper lid, maf, slp LM). I also have a 3500 stall TC. I don't really know anyone in my area with a fbody so I can't see how the cam will act myself. The car will be an everyday driver for a while.
The cams I am presently looking at are TR 224/224-114 & TR 224/224-112. Is the idle going to be much worse with the 112? How much of a power difference is there between the two? I'm also concerned about having to change springs often. Will either of these cams burn through springs? I am assuming that both of these cams will be streetable, if I'm way off on any of this please let me know. I'm kinda a newb
Thanks in advance,
Craig

you dont want the 112 in a auto. I have talked to a few people and depending on emissions you may want to strp up to a 226/226. This was recommended to me by a very well known sponsor.

I was under the impression that with a tune and TC it wouldnt matter too much that I have an A4. Another question while I'm on the subject of tuning. I will have to drive a ways to get the tune ( no dyno tuners in Corpus Christi, TX). So my question is will I do damage by driving without a tune, or will it just run poorly?
Thanks,
Craig

I am presently installing a 3500 stall and my TR224/114 is on it's way. I decided that I'll just have to live with it until I can get LTs and a tune....

I hear the 224 will make it run a little rich.

Both cams are streetable. The 114 is slightly more "streetable", yet slightly less in the powerband. You are going to 'need' the tune more with the 112. Even Comp 918 springs should last a long time with either cam. "Most people" (like me) choose the 114 over the 112 if their concerned about passing emissions. Hope that helps - good luck.

The cam will make the car run rich and idle poorly until tuned. I had to drill a couple of holes in my T.B. plate to get the correct idle because of the poor vacuum. Don't be suprised if you don't foul a couple of plugs until you get it tuned.

I dont know of any A4 daily drivers with a 112. My 114 is a bit cranky on cold mornings.

Turbo, It's about time you step up and put a cam in that thing, I have been on you for that since I have known you. Hey, if you want to see some real performance , just give me a call or drop an email. You know how to reach me.

Hey Mark....what do ya mean real performance? Like 600 hp 427s?

edit: this will be cam #2...I sold the LPE cam, which may or may not have been a mistake...I have heard of people putting down 380hp with that cam, long tubes, and the other bolt ons. I guess I dont expect much more than that with this 224....

Had a TR224/224 112LSA on my M6 car and really liked it overall. I would not use the 112 (personally) with an Auto unless you were going to idle it up a bit as the 112 can be really touchy at times.

I'm in the same boat as Calongo SS and his questions are the same ones I had. The TR224/224 cam is also what I have been looking at. I really want the lopy sound of the 112 LSA but I don't think it will pass emissions without a special tune so my best bet is the 114LSA cam.
What I was wondering though is if they make a 113 LSA grind? This would give us the best of both worlds.
What do most guys see as net gains out of a 224/224 114LSA cam and how does this cam compare to the LS6 or hotcam?
BTW: I'm not trying to hijack your thread I think it this would be useful info to have in the thread for other users to see in the future.

I have the 224/224 114 in mine with most all the basic bolt ons. I think the is just about the best cam you can put in an A4 car that is driven on the street. With tuning mine drives and idles great, in the morning I just let it idle for a minute or so. I do get some surging if I get in it cold and just drive, but a minute or so is all it takes.

Most people have found that there is very little difference in actual power between the 112 and the 114. The 114 still has just a hint of lope to it, perfect for a sleeper street car.

Thanks for the input guys. And thanks for your questions Brett, I'm also interested to know how these cams compare to the LS6.
