Does this sound like a hell no! head porting
So I called a local machine shop about cutting my 241s down about 15 thousandths and while I was on the phone I asked if they do porting and he said yea. A "street port/gasket match" would be 250 or all out would be 800. I asked have you done any LS head before and he said we've never ported them but they would be about like anything else. He said he would mill them for about 60 each. Should I run for cover or would you guys trust him. I'm going to be running a torquer 2 and just wanted to do all the small things I could before I put it all back together thanks.

I would send them off for CNC honestly. I took some 241s to a local machine shop and told them to cut 25 off and they said "whoa man, how you gonna get your intake to line up?"

Run for cover....LOL
And I'm not looking for the work....(I don't mess with stock castings anyway).
Use a proven shop that has ported and worked with the Gen III family of head before. Plenty of good shops to choose from on this site.
Do your homework....spend a little more if necessary

I agree with the majority census ,,,,,,,,,,,$250 sounds a little low for anything that would put up quality proven #'s ,,,,,,,,,,,but at least he was honest about not having experience with LS based gen chevy engines . You never know for sure ,,,,,he could do a really good job ,,,,,,,,,,just hard to tell without trying him out or at the least talking with some of his customers about the work he did on their heads .

There are some very important advantages to CNC porting over hand porting. Port to port consistency is about perfect with CNC head porting whereas hand porting can and usually does vary. This is not only important for air/fuel flow, but also for tuning consistency. Especially on fuel injected engines.
CNC is generally considerably cheaper in a quality for quality scenario. This is because, when hand porting, the amount of time you can spend and subsequently the amount of money you can charge for your time is dependent on each individual job. Whereas when doing CNC port program development, you can spend much more time refining the port because your work will be used on many sets of heads from which you can profit.
In most all cases where you are using a popular head, like an LS1 head, CNC head porting will be a much greater value. And, likely a better performer too.

if you are DIY and want to port your own heads ,get some used 5.3 heads to practice on.there are some good head porting threads here with pics.for $1100 you can get some ported PRC 243s from TSP.

Its really not that big of a deal whether I have them ported or not. I just wanted to make the most out of it with the parts I all ready had. I sink all my money into the T/A but if I could have got another 20hp or so for 3 or 400 I would have done it. I'll just find another shop and have them milled and put it together. Thanks
