I know it would running the ms3 just wondering if id be able to get more outta the motor using a smaller lift cam with a lower duration with milled 317'sa since i already have them n a cam is alot cheaper than a set of heads

PTV will be the issue with milling the 317s to get the right amount of SCR in the motor and effecting flow at the same time. The 228/232 should produce better torque but lay over buy 6200, where the MS3 should carry further out to the 6400-6500 range and making more hp up top.

That was the only thing i kinda didnt like about the ms3 when i had it in the stock ls1 it was dead as 4a oclock until about 23-2500a rpms but made up for it from then on it pulled like a ****.
Im just check options here might end up changing pistons anyways pending on what the clyinders look like when i pull it down

Your 317's are a good buy for someone looking to go forced induction. That should help offset your cost some. Actually, someone will pickup that MS3 as well if you decide to go smaller.
Milling your 317's limits your potential resale too, aside from effecting your available PTV clearance.

Im actually in the same dilemma. I got a set of 317s for free off of an Escalade LQ9 for free, so I figured you cant beat free and they have the same ports as the 243s. Im in the middle of doing some nice port work to them and after a lot of talking with Texas Speed I am going to run them with a TSP 233/239 112LSA cam. They said it would make great streetable power with these heads even if I didnt mill them, but I planned on putting the cam in and mocking the heads up to measure PTV clearance and milling as much as I can get away with. Ive heard of a few people running more cam and milling 317s enough to get back to 10:1 compression and even a bit more.

Yea dont mind milling the 317 heads at all since ive got them n dont hardly have any $ in them. So $400 on a cam sure as hell beats $1500-2000 on a set of aftermarket heads. Especially since my build is mainly just to get the car back on the road n have a play toy with decent power that i dont have to reem the sh@t out of it to enjoy the cam other than an awsome sounding lope

You can mill the 317s to stock or close enough so that it wouldn't cause issue. Obviously there's no set amount you can mill them to be safe as every cam is going to give you different PTV clearance. The only way to surely know is to put the cam in you are going to use with the head gasket and heads in place and see how much clearance you have and then mill them accordingly. Unless your using a fairly large cam your going to be able to get close or the same as stock compression by milling the 317s if you do it right which would definatly be an improvement over the 241s. Would be even better if u went through the heads a little and cleaned them up. And you'll still save some money. Just like you this is the route I'm going as my car is a daily driver looking for more power on a budget. Just getting tired of everyone knocking on the 317 heads. Just do it right and you won't have a problem
