How well did that cam work with that compression? I'm kinda in the same boat you were in

Hey man, such a long time since this thread was replied to but here I am in 2023, with a 98 C5 and just had my crappy LS1 give out on me. Cracked block. Just bought a 6.0 LQ4 with 317 heads and btr stage 1 cam. Haven't gotten it put in yet and driven it to test it but any suggestions on what else I should do? I heard 706 heads were a better option but I'm down to hear what LS1 tech and corvette forum has to say. This is my first Chevy LS car so bare with me

Get rid of the 317s. Either 243/799s or 706/862s will make more power. The latter 2 have smaller intake valves, but the compression increase more than makes up for it. Go watch Richard Holdener's comparison videos and you'll see the difference.

Wow this is a blast from the past thread lol. To answer how things went at that time with that setup was great. If you are keeping the 317 heads and doing a cam swap I would highly recommend milling the heads .030 to bump up the compression and be plenty safe. This will gain you a lot better response and pickup some power for minimal costs. I also suggest long tube headers. At that time before I went to my turbo setup with the milled 317 heads, 228r cam, longtube 1 7/8 headers,ls6 intake and tune my car made 399whp and 410tq . It was fun to drive with a 6spd.

*Edit* Switching heads to the 243 heads from my milled 317 heads made virtually no measurable difference to my dyno numbers btw. Do with that information as you please.

317s and 243s use the same port cores, so that makes sense that there wasn't much difference between the two once the combustion chambers were closer in size.

Yup. Pretty much the same intake port, with the 317 having a bigger chamber volume area vs the 243/799.

An LS1 is usually not considered crappy by most. How did the block crack? Freezing up due to lack of antifreeze? Or?? Just curious, thanks..

Hi, I have an LQ4, milled 317 Heads and looking at the TSP 228r. On your LQ4 were you running stock dished pistons and getting near 400whp? You also said an LS6 intake? Different injectors?

Yup it was stock untouched dished pistons, the 317's were milled, stock ls6 intake and injectors, i think i had a oem ls1 throttle body that was ported, long tube headers.Nothing fancy with a tune got 399whp and i had a very tired 9bolt rear end with 3.23 gear.

This is going back quite sometime to remember the setup lol

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to all this. Is an ls6 intake what comes stock on an LQ4?

No. The LQ4 is a truck engine, and would have a truck intake on it.
The LS6 was strictly a Corvette engine.
You might want to read up a lot more on LS engines
