Default Lq4/317 cam only recommendations

Hey guys I just bought a low mileage Lq4 from an 05 truck that was rear ended a few days ago.Im going to swap it out for my dying ls1 currently in my 87 T/A. I had planned on building the ls1 but it would need a full rebuild and maybe machine work plus mods I had in mind and easily become a 5-6k.This lq4 is stock and has 317 heads and with maybe another $1500 to complete my swap and add small boltons I would like to atleast throw a cam in it.Ive been eyeing the Tsp 228r/112lsa cam for a very long time and was wondering would this cam be too much to put in with the current heads and compression and stock manifolds.I daily drive the car and want good all round powercurve with a nasty lope and hoping to still be close to over 350 rwhp/tq.

Any other suggestions for an over the shelf cam as I have only a few days to decide. Thanks

Also is it worth anything to swap my ls1 steamlines onto the 317 heads instead of having the rear ports blocked off?

Yes Im going to do that and keep the ls1 lines.I just want to make sure if I get the 228r cam that it will compliment the motor without any issues and trying to get clear answers about what electronics need to be swapped over from the ls1 to the lq4

Both motors should be almost identical, other than the lq4 missing a front accessory bolt hole that needs to be drilled and tapped. The 228 should work for you for now, but I'd look at getting headers and possibly pulling the heads to have them milled down in the future to get the most out of the cam.

For now..the funding to build the motor the way I want isnt there yet.I want want to gather enough to replace some things,I need a new o2 sensor,ps pump, alternator,hd pilot bearing.Even being stock would be more power and torque than my broken ls1 which kept me happy, but I miss a cammed v8 soo badly.228R is always what I had in mind..might aswell do it now.I have 2 ls6 intakes, for my thirdgen t/a..headers are an issue so sticking with stock mani's for awhile before I go big exhaust.Future mods will only further wake up the lq4 and my future mods wont be crazy...worked 243 heads, ported tb,150 shot and maybe mid-headers with 3" cutout and 3:42 gears.

Should make a fun daily driver and still hurt some feelings around here..my ls1 still bruises ego's as it sits.

Also do not skimp on valve springs if you go with those lobes. Get a good strong spring

I spoke with Tsp and they said to run 7.400 rods and the Pac 1218 springs.I asked about using a dual spring and was told its not needed for my application.Im just concerned about when I do decide to switch heads to 243's if its worth getting dual springs now or later.Valvetrain noise doesnt matter to me once the hood is closed I cant hear it lol..and compared to my old flat tappet 383 tpi motor...now thats valvetrain noise for you with loud injectors was noticeable inside the cabin

I'd get the springs that your going to run in the end....that way you just buy one set of springs and keep them instead of a set now, then another set later. Also when it comes to yhe springs have the spring seat pressure checked and tested, then shimmed if needed. Great springs not setup tight can wear out quick, break or even worse take drop a valve and send parts flying.

If you have the money to spend get the TI locks and retainers, if you even more money get light weight valves....they are not NEEDED, but the lighter your valve train is the more stable it is at high rpms, and will last longer. If you go over .600" lift, plan on checking and possibly changing vslve springs every few years.

Like 95maro said, I'd keep the steam lines too, but when you swap to an ls6 intake you will need to do a little grinding to the underside of the intake to clear the lines do it seals to the heads

I think that 228 cam will be a great choice.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but with the 228r cam in a stock LQ4/317 head what valve springs would you suggest?

When I emailed Texas speed they told me that the standard Pac 1218 single springs are good to use and if you want added insurance you can upgrade to either the Comp 918's or the Pac 1518 springs good to 650 lift.Being on a tight budget Ill be using the standard 1218's for now because I may change heads later or have the 317's milled and ported and then go with dual springs..upgrade rockers lifters etc for a decent performing head.

Thats what I was thinking. I have thought about using the Patriot gold .660 springs and retainers. I'll just have to see where I'm at when I buy a cam.

Thanks for the help.
