Default Removing Bottom / Lower Timing Gear, What Tool to Use???

Hello there, I am in the process and haven't been in these engines in 7 or 8 years do to physical ability, anyway what type of tool are you all using to pull it? I have a 2 prown puller and 3 prown puller and they won't fit as they are behind the lower pulley to block. Is there a specific way you all are pulling them or a tool that I can rent from places like Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts by chance? If so and if you know what one and/or the part number for it I would GREATLY APPRICIATE IT. THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR LOOKING AND / OR REPLYING!

Don't go crazy prying on it, but wedge a flathead screwdriver in behind it and apply a little pressure. Move around on the sprocket, and it should pop right off.

I got a small 3 jaw puller from autozone. It had thiner jaws that fit perfectly behind the gear. Just take care and make sure you protect the end of The crank from damage.

I think it was a Kent Moore J-41558 costing about $10-$15 or so... you can find them on ebay or searching oline on your local parts store (not autozone or etc.. maybe Napa ?.)

A smaller 2 jaw works very well for this and they are cheap/easy to come by. Prying behind it with a screwdriver??? No

Alright I'm rather annoyed and looking for help on this one.

Ordered the J-41558 and had a feeling it wasn't going to be the complete tool pictured here. Well it arrived yesterday and I was right. The plate that sits behind the gear, the 2 bolts and 2 washers are what came in the 41558 package but the other pieces in this picture are not included. Does anyone have a Kent Moore part number or numbers?

I rented the autozone tool twice, in both sizes, and 2 or 3 arm configuration wouldn't work. I even made a drunk rant thread about it

The one from Advance Auto worked like a CHARM though. Took more time to set up the arms than it did to pull the gear off.

Best of luck with the Kent tool. It's nice, that's for sure.

If im not mistaken, thats just a balancer puller. You can find them just about any where.

The rest of that tool is just a standard Harmonic balancer puller. You can get it at any parts house. Lisle is a good brand.

Even though you bought the tool, and a balancer puller by now.....

For the rest of the guys reading with the same dillema.

You can make the plate from 1/8" steel. A hole saw cut's the relief, die grinder to shape, and drill and tap for the holes. Then 2 long bolts and the balancer puller.

it seems to be just luck of the draw with the gear pullers on this one. I got a generic 3-jaw from Autozone and it worked perfect, others have reported some that don't work or just slip off...

WELL WORTH THE $$$$!!!!!

I spent hours and knicking my block trying to get it off with a three jaw. Used the correct tool, it was off in 5 minutes and slid off easily. Many Kent Moore tools are expensive, but they sure do make the job a hellava lot easier.

All you need in addition to the J-41558 is the harmonic balancer puller from Autozone and that part number is 29017. Those two tools combined took me less than 2 minutes to have it off
