Draining coolant from block

Draining coolant from block
Hi guys, I'm replacing the head gaskets after finding oil in the coolant/radiator. I also found what appears to be coolant in the power steering resovior. I want to drain all of the coolant from the block and would like to know if there is a way to do so now that I have the heads of? Is there a plug that can be removed, or should I do the process described in some threads that involve removing thermostat and opening the drain ****, etc... Once I put the engine back together?

Make sure you either remove or otherwise protect the starter and alternator (F-car) from the coolant that drains out.

also, keep in mind there are 2 oil passage plugs next to the cooling jacket (under cylinders #1 and #7). These are also 8mm allen plugs and look the same as the coolant plug under #8. Don't confuse them!

Unless something is seriously wrong with my LS1 block, there was a drain plug for the coolant under #8, had to remove the starter to get to it. However, the 17mm plug on the drivers side of the block was under #1 on my block. I just undid everything tonight to drain the entire cooling system. I'm pulling the heads off to check for a crack or head gasket on the even bank so I wanted all the water or coolant out. I didn't see any other drain plugs on either side for oil. I wish there was.
