knocking after intake removal

knocking after intake removal i was taking my intake off to look at my heads and when i put it back on and started up my car, it was running real rough and when i went to raise the rpm's i heard i cling and i shut it right off... i took everything back of thinking it might have been a socket but would a socket fit under the valve?? it would have been about a 10 mm socket?? i checked the valves and couldnt see any damage and i even got a mirror to look and still didnt see damage??
so could a socket fit under the valve and what else could it be??? thanks
