Rod & Main Cap Bolts/What is a USED bolt?
When new bearings are installed, plastigage is used to determine the clearances, after the bolts are torqued and angled.
Then, the bolts are removed, and the plastigage is measured.
Providing that clearances are correct, all bolts are (reused) reinstalled to the same specs.
So, what is the difference between this reapplication of new bolts which have been torqued and angled, and reusing an original bolt, which has been torqued and angled to factory specs?

Unless the engine had the **** beaten out of it and you're staying relatively "stock" in power levels and usage, the original bolts can be re-used.
Properly torqued/stretched rod bolts "should not" be damaged simply by their installation.
Regardless, I would change them out for new ones during a re-build. After all, you've got everything apart.

Thanks, Paul. That makes good sense.
I suppose that following the reasoning you've presented, that the old/used crank main bolts would have endured 'less' stretch than the old/used rod bolts.
Nevertheless, the engine is out of the car, and new bolts will be used.

If I were using new GM rod bolts I would use the old bolts for clearancing/ plastigauging and install the new 1's for final assembly ,,,,,,,,,,ARP's can be used for both as long as they're not strechted to the max the first time or 2 . Same thing for GM mains bolts ,,,,,,old 1's clearancing and mocking up ,,,,,,new 1's for final assembly . Also apparently the main cap bolts can be re-used although I bought new 1's before I knew they could be re-used ,,,,,,,,only $90 ,,,,,,,,,not
