It was level and I checked about 2 hours after I got to work

Seeing that dipstick it looks like ur getting oil in the coolant. Are u still running dexcool or the green stuff? I'd run a cool pressure check and pull the plugs but that looks like a head gasket to me

I did a search on this and comes up almost universally as a head gasket leak. Anyway, I hope you get it worked out. Good luck.

Dexcool. Would a head gasket cause white smoke and over heating? Just wondering cause I've seen none of that. My thinking is if I pull the heads on a block with 126,000 then it would be stupid to not build it considering I'm that far in it for the second time

Same here the only thing I hate is when you search and 10 people say head gasket and then 1 or 2 say something else lol makes you wonder...

If it is the original dexcool, then it may very well be that the dexcool is just gelling. For some reason this dexcool turns into a gel after awhile and you get almost what looks like your coolant.

I know exactly what you mean, but in your case there doesn't seem to be any other way oil could get into your coolant reservoir. Are you 100% sure that it's oil and not just funky Dexcool? If it is oil it looks like you'll be pulling the heads. I sympathize.

It appears to be oil. Almost looks like a layer of oil under coolant on the dipstick. One of my buddies who knows quite a bit about LS motors said it appears to be oil as well. I'll have to check all around the head gaskets this weekend

Looks like a 383 build is going to be in the works since I can use my factory block

Which kits allow for use of a factory block, it seems everyone these days goes with a short block.

Not factory block in the since of direct swap but mine can be bored to a 383 and I won't have to buy a block. I know you can't just pull factory pistons out and shove some 3.90x ones in

If your buying a crank and pistons, for just the price of a 6.0 block you could have a 408. Sell your ls1 block and you prob won't be out any money. 4" crank, 4.030 pistons and you are set.

My thinking as well! Just debating on the top end situation mainly heads. Don't have 2k to get just a new set of heads because right now I have patriot stage 2 5.3's 59cc which I wouldn't think would be great for a 408.

Ya but you could easily sell those to offset new cost. Just go L92's .

I was thinking L92's and a ls3 intake setup as well. Probably get some money back by selling my ls1 in the car now

just remember the iron block will be much heavier than your current block. 383 can make good power. If 400+ cubes is the goal. I'd search for an LS2 or LS3 block. Pistons and cranks are all about the same price.
