If you don't see any real signs of wear just run a hone in it real quick to get a good pattern back in the bore so your new rings seal up good

Yes, you need to break the glaze and get a good cross-hatch pattern in order to get new rings to seat.

I'd do it if I were you. As mentioned above, that will help with ring seal.

It will help, but if there is no obvious damage, the rings will seal fine. Rings these days are designed to seat and seal on existing cylinder surfaces.

But a light hone with a ball hone will not hurt. Just make sure to gap the rings accordingly.

My local shop hones for $7 per cylinder. So for about $50 it probably worth it. Then while your there you can have them clean the block which will clean out all the oil passages and make it nice and pretty.

I agree. If you hone, use a fine grit. Like 380 or so.

The best "do it yourself" method is to use a flex-hone....it is a dingleberry looking device that does a real good job, I consulted with tony mamo about grit and he recommended 400 so that's what I got...the hone is like $50 on eBay

380 or 400 grit will do. I like The 380 ish better as a rougher surface will force the rings to seat quicker leaving less time for the cylinders to wash down.

Just make sure you get the cross hatch angles right, about a 45 degree angle on the cross hatch is nominal.

Once it's running, get it up in the revs to about 2k for a few minutes to keep it from loading up with fuel. Let it hang for about 5 minutes and take it out and flog it.
