the idle needs to be a little lower and headers. the stock manis hold enough back pressure in the cylinders to make it fire correctly at that idle speed. but a cammed car that doesnt sound cammed is pretty bad ***. super sleeper

I saw someone put in pushrods that were the wrong length. Can't remember if they were to long or to short but it sounded like their was a stock can in it. He finally got it right and now it sounds great. Although when it had the wrong pushrods it was very noisey

have your tuner set your idle lower, around 850, and try and lean it out some in the idle range, and maybe lower the timing a tad, in the idle zone. This works for me to add the "chop"!!

we tried to lower the idle down to around 800 or so, and the car ran like ****. Sounded mean, but didnt run right.

Sounds camed to me. You should be able to tune it to get it to idle right at 800-850

Have your tuner set the over/under idle speed timing tables to -8/+8 across the board & lower the idle rpm as others are suggesting.

Tune it to idle at 900rpm or so should help but it should still be noticeable where its at. Mine is with a 230/238 1113+2.

Pushrods could be too short but the rockers should be making noise if that's the case and I wouldn't expect the strong dyno numbers. So not very likely.

It could be all in the tune. If it has a lot of timing at idle sometimes that makes it less choppy I've heard. You can also run the cam numbers to figure out how much overlap you have. It might look big, but the chop comes from overlap. You can have a "small" cam with a lot of overlap and make it sound nasty (Comp sells them as Thumper cams).

12* positive overlap and you're telling me it sounds as stock? Riiiiiight

Just lower the idle a bit.

Gotta love those cats @ ECS...Haven't hit the strip yet this year, Matt @ ECS says I should be able to get into the 10's, which is what I was shooting for per all motor. Of course the supercharger would be nice, but its getting harder and harder to trick the wife into not knowing I have added yet another power mod...Although it goes without saying (as many have stated), power is what matters, not sound, which I agree with mostly, but I am one who favors the sound of my ride over the radio any day; long live lope!

Yeah you should clearly be able to hear it!, Mines a 227/231 111lsa (7*overlap), w/950 idle and it's very obvious.

cam duration has only a little bit to do with the chop sound or lope sound....
valve events mean a lot more..
need to know actual valve events to know how much overlap you have, then we can say how choppy it should sound..but even that is not 100% certain as when the tune is good it will sound more tame than a tune that is not as good..

I have a perfect example...
my car... 248/252 .649/.646 112LSA+4 (duration at .050)(duration at .006 is 304/314)
I'm using the Holley Dominator ECM for engine management

and my cam does not sound all that big...

My MS3 lopes hard too at a 950 idle with a 113lsa through my Hooker CB or through the cutout...like others have said have your tuner play with the idle

Sometimes my FAST tb hangs idle at 1100 or so for a second until the IAC corrects for the hang. It is still very noticeably cammed even at 1100rpm.

In addition to taking a look at the valve events that impact this, it's amazing what a difference the exhaust setup makes.

I have a modest street cam in a 346 and it has a very subtle chop through full exhaust (headers, off road y and catback), however as soon as you crack the cutout open the cam lobe is extremely obvious.

So obvious that I've had a little old lady that obviously knows nothing about cars come up to me and ask me if the car sounds like that because something is broken.

Quick Reply: car doesnt sound cammed even though its a large cam
