Lol, I guess I'll just have to make sure do plenty of research before I get anything from a junk yard, they give the compression numbers so I'll just have to go off what those numbers and hope I won't have to use the warranty. Is there a range of compression I should stay away from?

Default 5.3

i say yay for the 5.3 no for the 4.8 i have a 4.8 stock silverado and feel that it's severally under powered and my opinion your not really saving any thing fuel wise cause your having to mash on the pedal more and give it more gas to make it get up and go. just my two cents

My question is, should I go with the 4.8 or save a lil more for the 5.3?
Go with the 5.3 if you going to mod it later down road, which you may the 5.3 will respond to upgrades better. 2nd you don't have to save ,there is little to no difference in price between them, in many cases the a 5.3 is cheaper. They made more 5.3s than any other displacement ,its supply and demand. Do some searches and you will see! Now if we were talking 5.3 vs 6.0 then you would have to pony up with mo dough.Bang for your buck , and for what you going to use it for 5.3 case closed. Just stay away from the early ones 99-00.

There is no reason to stay away from early engines...any displacement.

I bought a 4.8l thinking it was a 5.3l. But after i researched all you have to do is pull the oil pan off and look at the casting number on the rods. Just do a search for the two different casting numbers.

What compression is to low? And whats the max difference to compression can be from one cyclinder to the others? If I get something after 2007 is the swap harder or more involed?

the early engines crank snout is different length which requires trans from same year. im not sure of the which years though.

I have a 4.8 truck and it sux cuz its slower than 5.3 and seems to burn more gas. I wouldnt waste my time with anything smaller than 5.7 though

Man you ar going to be fine with the 4.8, those older trucks like that tip the scale at like 3600 pds. My brother has a 1977 k5 and it weighs 3800 (4X4). I'm sure the 4.8 want have a problem pushing around your '82 pickup. New trucks have quit abit more added on to them for safety etc.

I own an extended cab silverado with a 4.8 and have driven several 5.3's. They are very similar power wise but the 5.3 does have a bit more low end grunt. The 4.8 will rev a little bit higher to get the same job done. Gas mileage is about the same. If you plan on towing much, the 5.3 really shines. Otherwise, the 4.8 is a great little motor and will serve as a DD just fine.

I would go with which ever one is in the best shape for the money and not be very concerned with displacement.

Man, both gregsss and 02stampede are right. That "little" 4.8 will run circles around an old school 305. For a DD you can't go wrong. Super reliable and still hauls the mail. I've got 325K on mine... If the price is right, jump on it.

^^^true story

Only for the 6.0's because they used the 4l80 trans carried over from the 350 years.

Also, any year automatic trans will work with the long crank, you Just have to use the correct flexplate.

I bought a 4.8 from Bow Auto recyclers in New Hampshire, I found them on Ebay. $450 and got everything but MAF and O2s. I love it and can't wait to get these turbos on it. I runs really good in my 3800LB Chevelle. They also stand behind their products very well. I will use them again on my next swap.
