The guy I bought my car from told me that Comp sold him the wrong rocker arm studs. His mechanic (obviously a nimrod) screwed every one into the head and tore up the threads. The mechanic is/was also an airplane mechanic and said that they helicoil all cylinder heads for planes because it's stronger. He helicoiled the heads and installed the rockers/springs/pushrods/etc.

The car has 1.85 comp rockers on it which I took off today. I didn't take the guideplates out because I wasn't sure if I wanted to remove these studs. Should I be worried about R&Ring the studs? Will the Comp studs and guide plates work with stock 1.7 rrs?

yes, helicoils are heads and shoulders better than just the stock heads. All of the hi-po aftermarket blocks come with every bolt hole helicoiled. I would do the same to any ls1 block I used...except for the head bolts...the holes are just too deep and it would be a bitch. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

If you use the stock rockers you do NOT need the guideplates, but why would you want to go back to stock if you have the CC Pro Mag 1.85 ratio fully rollerized rockers? I know the heli-coils are stronger than aluminum threads, but guess what the heli-coils are held in by? You guessed it: aluminum.

 

Can't use 1.85 rockers with the camshaft I want. According to that article, the helicoils are stronger then just the regular threads. The helicoils have a larger diameter and therefore have more surface area putting pressure on the head.

 

Helicoils are stoneage compared to timeserts,which are the only aproved thread repair
for rollsroyce and jaguar.
