Default ARP head studs need help asap!

Ok, so it says to hand tighten them, but some of the bottom threads are still showing where it screws into the block, is this normal? It's the small top ones.

Hahaha no I checked that, the hex on the stud goes facing up, their the same length, some screw in farther then others when hand tightened for some reason.

They can't go in upside down, the threads are different.

Hand tight like they say, if a few threads show don't worry about it.

Are the thread bosses clean and dry? You're installing the studs dry?

I just installed my studs last night (2004+), there was no exposed thread, they went all the way in until they hit the shank. BEFORE I used the ARP thread chaser, they would vary in each hole. Thats why I'm such an advocate for the ARP tool.

That could be your problem, or was your block decked??

My concern right now, is with the TOP bolts *Head installed* there is no exposed threads above the nut.

No I didn't clean the holes, it should not need it, its a brand new shortblock. And I'm installing them dry it says the only thing that should have anything on the threads are the ones that go into water jackets.

Well there's your problem. You need to run a cleaning chase through the holes first.

None of these bolts go into a water jacket.

Anything could be in those holes, I'd clean and/or blow them out. I'm pretty sure none of mine showed threads.

Actually ARP told me to lubricate the threads with oil or Ultra lube.

Interesting. In a blind hole, studs are supposed to go in dry.

Directly from ARP:

Hi rob
Kit # 234-4317 = 11mm studs will torque at 80 ft lbs in 3 steps & 8MM
STUDS WILL TORQUE AT 25 FT LBS. you want to use lube or oil on the
threads in the block with dry holes & just install hand tight only.USE
THE ARP LUBE ON THE TOP THREADS AND WASHER. The torque is the same for
the iron & alumn block and heads. This info is posted on our web site
(ARP-BOLTS.COM) UNDER KIT INSTRUCTIONS.

The ARP instruction sheet for all the LS head stud kits only say to apply sealant if the studs go into a water jacket. None of them say to apply oil or any lube.

Searching about this topic here on LS1tech results in a few folks saying they get different answers from ARP depending on who they talk to. One guy says he speaks to three guys and goes with the two matching answers.

As the ARP instruction sheet does not say to lube the block end of head studs, I would install them dry. A call to my favorite performance machine shop also says install them dry.

In reality...It doesnt even matter. If anything the ARP lube will prevent the stud from seizing in the block and galling up the threads. Theres instructions out there that say you can put loctite on them too...

Almost 100 dollars for 2 thread chaser's, that is stupidly expensive for something I'm only going to use 1 time.
