Default main cap bolts

Are the bolts for the main caps reusable? Or go new?

Get new bolts, they are torque to yeild bolts. The small side ones you can reuse.

I believe you have that backwards Conan, the main bolts are reuseable, and the sides are supposed to be TTY, but most people reuse them as well. There is a thread here somewhere about this very subject...

My experance has been when they give you a light TQ spec and then the "turn an additional X degrees" thats a TTY bolt.

Inner main bolts.... Step one - 15 ft #s Step two - turn an additional 80 deg.

Outer main bolts... Step one - 15 ft#s Step two - turn an additional 50 deg

Side bolts... 18 ft#'s

I have alway replaced them unless I'm running ARP studs. But some one chime in if they are reuseable.

All the main bolts are reuseable, even the side ones. They just look TTY because they use an angle procedure however the bolts are all reusable, gm recommends replacing the side ones because they have a sealnt on them to prevent oil leaks from the crank case...

Direct from GM service information:

"In order to prevent engine block oil leakage, install NEW M8 crankshaft bearing cap side bolts.
The crankshaft bearing cap M8 side bolts have a pre-applied sealant patch applied to the bolt flange."

Document ID #73768 Crankshaft and Bearing Installation.

Therefore, both the main cap bolts AND the main side bolts CAN BE REUSED, however, you will want to apply a small bead of silicone to the underside of the side bolt head to seal it up.

Bolt her back together and just follow the original gm procedures and you should be fine however if you dont want to get new side bolts atleast put thread sealant on them

Do not confuse Torque to Angle fasteners with Torque to Yield, TTA simply provides a more accurate stretch of the fastener while TTY stretches the fastener just beyond it's yield point.
