Default Junk Yard Dog 346ci motor completed!!

I had been having problems with the new solid roller motor last week. It was down 30+hp and using coolant. We did a leak down and found 44% on two cylinders (25-30% on the rest) and the air was coming from around the intake valves on every port. It looked as if the valvejob was screwed due to the either the seats being forced through the heads or valves being slammed shut due to the aggressive cam I was running. The head gasket was slightly blown on one cylinder as well.

This came at a very bad time since I was just about to put the TNT F2 kit on the car getting it ready for this weekend's spring break shootout (which has been postponed, but this was not know this past week). I knew I could not race with the motor being hurt as it was and I did not have time to get this one repaired. So, it was time to slap another stock motor back in the car. Only problem was I disassebled my old TR 230/stock head motor a few months back for a rebuild and it was down to the bare block. lol I HAD to make the Spring Break Shootout and was going to do anything in my power to get there, along with installing the nitrous, fuel pump, 4.30s gears,etc.. It was going to be a busy week. lol

The block was at Futral Motorsports being honed and having cam bearings installed since I did plan on putting it back together one day in the future, but just not this quickly. He also had some LS6 pistons w/ valve reliefs already cut, so I went ahead and brought those back with me
(thanks Ron!), along with some Clevite rod bearings and Federal Mogul main bearings.

Now, I had to find some cylinder heads. Luckily, we had a set of GTP stg 2 truck heads milled .050" that were still sitting at the shop. These were taken off a customer's car a few months back in exchange for some new ones. We were planning on sending them back to GTP for a refreshening, but had never got around to it. Lucky for me. I decided to use my old TR230/224 111lsa cam that I ran with stock heads awhile back. It does pay to hold on to old parts.

Now, I had all my parts needed for assembly. It was just a matter of cleaning the parts, assembling the motor and heads, removing the old motor, and installing the new one. I started Friday night and had the car running Sunday afternoon. It was a mad rush getting everything done.

Here are the complete details on the motor:

- stock block honed by FMS
- LS6 pistons and rods w/ valve reliefs for the intake and exhaust valves
- stock crank
- ARP rod bolts
- Diamond Racing file fit rings (file fit with nitrous in mind)
- Clevite rod bearings (STD)
- Federal Mogul main bearings (STD)
- used GTP stg 2 truck heads milled .050"
- used TR230/224 111 lsa cam
- TR 7.35" pushrods
- '01 GM multi-layer steel head gaskets

The motor fired right up and initial impressions were great! I put a few miles on it and it was time to strap it down to the dyno.

This resulted in:

440rwhp/410rwtq! Not too bad for a motor slapped together in a weekend.

It's a shame that the Shootout has been rescheduled for April, but it does give me some extra time to get the nitrous on the car and dialed in.

The motor has got the nickname "Junk Yard Dog" around the shop now since it was assembled with alot of used/junk parts. We'll see if it can stand up to a 250 shot. lol

I'll have some track times hopefully in the next week if I can find some time to get away from work and school.

Big thanks to Shane, Jonathan, and John for helping me clean parts and getting the motor installed Sunday. Also, thanks to Allan @ FMS for assembly advice and Geoff/Angie at Thunder for use of the shop this weekend.

Wow, 440 RWHP from nothing but parts 'laying around' isn't too shabby at all! Too bad that doesn't work with computers... If I assemble a computer out of the parts I have laying around, well, a 486-100 with 16MB of memory just won't hit the equivalent of 440 RWHP.

Sorry to hear about the solid roller motor. That's a serious bummer. Hopefully things will get figured out soon tho.

Hope to see you in April here in TX!

Thanks! I was surprised with the output as well due to the parts used and the heads really were not as good as some of the other GTPs we have used in the past. They flowed 280cfm on the intake, but only 190cfm on the exhaust. This is why they were going back to GTP. Just imagine if they flowed the normal 220cfm.

that sucks about the solid roller Jason.

Glad to hear you got the car running again so quickly.

Next time you pull that TR 230 out, send it this way for "A4 testing."

I wouldnt call a 440RWHP setup a bunch of junk laying around.Thats pretty impressive if u ask me and it looks like alot of prep went into this backup motor, just that u did it quickly.

It should scoot w/that kind of power...

Dont worry about the SR.
You'll get it worked out soon enough.

Good luck....

Heres a question I dont see answered here....with this thrown together motor, was the PCM ever tuned? Did you have a chance to measure A/F? If so, how much do you think you could gain with a tune? The possibility of getting 450+RWHP from a TR230 and GTP Stage 2s is pretty cool!
