Default High Mileage Cam and Headers??

Hello! I have a 98 trans am with roughly 175k miles. The engine is in great shape and is all stock. I was looking to do a cam and header swap as well as putting an ls6 or fast intake/tb on it. My question is simply regarding the mileage. Will it endanger my engine to get around 400rwhp??? If so is there an easy fix? I'm thinking ill probably end up with a 233/239 112 LSA cam with a single beehive valve spring kit, texas speed 1 7/8in lt headers and an ls6 intake. I'll probably also replace the oil pump and timing chain, am i missing anything?? I'm planning on doing the work myself but don't have too much experience. Any advice would be helpful as I am very new to this. My budget is roughly $1200-1800 but is flexible. I intend to continue to use my car as a DD and mostly want to just hit 400-450rwhp.

with that budget you are looking at headers and intake only. Thoses two alone will run you about 1100. As for the camming a engine with alot of miles I just did my cam and I have 148k on mine.

Okay I went through and itemized. Please correct me if I'm missing something or have incorrect prices
Oil Pump + Timing chain - $200
Used LS6 intake -$350
Texas Speed 1 7/8in Headers-$500
Texas Speed Cam Package w/ valve springs and push rods- $600
Dyno Tune - $450
All of that adds up to $2100 (I know I said $1,800 but it's pretty loose) , plus fluids etc. Sound about right? That should be around 420rwhp right?

I wouldn't worry about the number specifically. You'll see anywhere between 380-440 depending on so many things (I'm guessing you're an M6, not A4). The number is just a number, I'd say that your times would be low 12's/high 11's with that setup done properly.

Yes I'm an M6. While I have done quite a bit of research regarding cams, im fairly ignorant when it comes to headers and the exhaust aspect. I live in KS where there is no enforced emission standard for motor vehicles. Would it be an advantage to remove my cats? What kind of improvements would I see from true duals?

True duals with longtubes on a cam car like the size cam you're talking about will be better than any y setup you could ever run!

You don't need 1 7/8 headers first off. 1 3/4'' primaries for your application are perfect. with 175k on the motor, i would find something with lower duration and much easier on lift. This will ensure components such as rockers, lifters, stay alive longer. I would invest in a rocker trunion kit as well for some added valve train integrity. A cam I would suggest would be a 228R. Very popular, easy to tune, drives great, and makes good power everywhere. To be completely honest, I have seen a few LS1's go with an aftermarket cam with your mileage and ran fine...for a little while. If I were you, I would invest in a set of headers and a nice exhaust setup. Save up and refresh the motor bottom to top then worry about adding a cam, heads, etc. Putting all that stuff in there and for it to grenade 15-25k down the road and possibly destroy who knows what. Food for thought...

I did the mayhem 2 kit, added ls7 lifters and trunion upgrade. They also now substitute the valvetrain with lunati gold instead of patriot

I wouldn't cam it it has to many miles on it in my opinion it will drastically decrease the life of the engine I have cammed a few ls1s at around the 150k mark and soon after they started to smoke and consume oil

sounds like a great plan ,you can do a frost mail order tune for $150.you will need a balancer remover and install tool.

228R Cam Package
TSP 1 7/8" Headers
TSP True Duals

Probably going to be closter to $2500 when it's all installed and tuned, but a very streetable combo.

When she blows up, have some cash socked away for a 6.0L - this is my plan.
