Default Core LS1 engine prices

A junkyard I go to has three LS1 cores they did recently get in.I told the owner I am heavily interested in them. The blocks are in good shape with no holes in them. One has top end noise, the second one has bottom end problems called rod knock and the third smoked.I plan on buying them tommorrow morning before his core buyer buys them on Monday. This will be my first purchase of LS1 cores. How much should I pay for them? These came out of 1998,1999 camaros and the third came out of a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am.All three are complete.I also bought a good running LS1 out of a 2001 camaro for $1,000.00 from this yard too,I trust this yard and I know they heard the vehicle run before pulling it.

Look on ebay for ideas of pricing for those year engines.

The 1998 LS1 block is one of the strongest aluminum blocks in the whole LSx line of aluminum blocks. If you plan to build a re-sleeved engine for big power, use that one.

Since they let a good engine go for $1K...I'd shoot for $750 for the 3 ?? units?

Picked them up this morning including the good running 2001 LS1.Tore apart the 1998 LS1,everything looks good inside and did not hurt the block inside. This one is the one with the rod knock.I have to scrap the crankshaft,I checked it with a micrometer and the one rod journal with the rod knock was way out of spec.I know I can get a good aftermarket crank for it.

I thought the 98 and 99 blocks had issues with the oiling along the rear crossover. Guys were machining out the openings to get better flow.

Personally, I stayed away from a 98 block for this exact reason.

I am rebuilding the 1998 LS1,dropping it in my 1977 Chevy mud truck.Called the machine shop I go to,said the #8 rod which I found loose with the bearing gone might be ok and to bring it in with the block.I plan on ordering parts on Monday including a set of Patriot heads and staying with the fuel injection.

easy fix. if your going to shred half the block to sleeve it....machining the passage is nothing. small price to pay for having a better foundation.

I missed the 're-sleeve' part.
