Default ? About cam

I am going to be installing a comp 212/218 lsa 114 or lsa 115 cam into my lq4. Now my question is what do I need to change in my valve train such as pushrods and springs.

I wouldn't waste time on that cam man, at a minimum do a 222/224 for some noticeable results. Valvesprings, pushrods, trunion upgrade is recommended. Depending on the mileage (if high), I would replace the timing chain and oil pump as well. Again, deepening on the mileage, lifters would be a highly recommended replacement (LS7 lifters) but will require the removal of the cylinder heads.

Nothing wrong with going with a small cam, it'll still be a step up from a Z06 cam. As already stated by TransAmcoupe98, it depends on the engine mileage.

Motor has 150k on it but I'm overhauling it basically. I am not putting this in a high horsepower car. I'm putting it into a mud truck. So I'm aiming for low end power and that is the cam that Texas speed suggested.

replace everything i listed...while heads are off to replace lifters, get the worked with a valve job (maybe new ones) port, new head gaskets of course and ARP head bolts/studs.

I'm on a budget. I just need to know if I need longer pushrods or not. I am putting new valve springs in from an ls6. If I could afford to have my heads built I would

I'd consider look at a cam/s with a lower lsa (110-112)for even better low-end trq.
I believe SDPC has a cam possibly more suited to your use. 214/218 .559/.562 111lsa +2 .

There's one way to know for sure, measure with a pushrod length checker after it's back together and you're ready to put the rockers on. You also can go by what you preload is from zero-lash to tq spec., if you have good PRs with a known length.

I would have to roughly say 7.425" PR length, but you won't know for sure until put a few in and check your preload.

The 212/218 lsa114 is a low lift cam for rpm range of 1200-6000 and 212/218 lsa 115 power range is 1500-6800. I have to decide if I want to be throttle happy or crawl it.

The TSP 228R would also be a good cam. Very driveable with good HP & TQ increases. It sounds good also. Mine is 112 LSA.

If you really have your mind set on one of the two cam recommended by TSP then get the Comp Cams #54-412-11, 212/218 114lsa "low lift". with the 114lsa and the 2* advance it'll have a slightly better low-end, and lower power band compared to the 212/218 115 "high lift" with 0* advance.
BTW, I'd still suggest going with the SDPC 214/218 .559/.562 111lsa +2 over either one of those, or have TSP have one done to the same specs.

Just to kind of update this. I'm now going to flat top ls2 pistons and 799 heads. What do you suggest for more torque gains. My plans changed. I need street friendly and low end.

Will this have stock exhaust manifolds or LT headers, and how high in cam lift are you willing to go?
FYI, going with more aggressive cam lobes will allow you to make more hp/tq without going larger in cam size.

check out cam quest 6 at comp cam,and try different cams with you engine.consider comp 54-455-11,it made the most torque of any ls cam I tried .you will need pac1518 springs ,stock length harden push rods from Texas Speed should work.rebuild the rocker arms . 54-408-11 make good torque and is lower lift.

I like the Comp 54-455-11 for a shelf grind, but I'd like it better with a 222 LXL lobes on the exhaust that will cut the valve train noise down, and max lift down to .604".

It's going long tubes. My heads have 12k miles on them. I want mild. Trying to get about 450hp and torque at the flywheel.

IMO, 214/220 112+3, use Comp Cams 214 LXL lobes(#13155) with .595" lift for the intake lobes, and the Extreme RPM high lift lobes(#3713) with .564" lift.
You'll have -7 degrees of overlap so it'll have a smooth idle, and have a really good DCR, and a great low-end power. Run it with a set of PAC 1211X valve springs($150).
Tick Performance or TSP can have Comp Cams grind this cam for you.

For your intended application you need TORQUE, and to make TORQUE you need overlap and a late opening exhaust valve event combined with an early opening and closing intake valve event.

My Saturday Night Special "Torque Max" Stage 1 is PERFECT for you application.

It's specs are 223/227 .61x"/.61x" 111+2 and I also offer a "milder" version with slightly less aggressive lobes for longer valve spring life that is 222/226 .59x"/.59X" 111+2.

If that doesn't sound like something you want we also have our "Street Heat" Stage 1 cam which is 221/226 .60x"/.60x" 115+3. It won't make the power the SNS Stage 1 does, but it will have a strong flat torque curve and a milder exhaust note at idle.

What other areas do you suggest upgrading as well? Any videos of those cams?
