Default Oil pan/Front cover install

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this....I was thinking of installing the pan and then the front cover, but I would think then I wouldnt have the pressure to seal the bottom of the cover.

What is the best way to do this?

id do oil pan first. the front cover will seal aginst the gasket. have done it this way a few times on ls motors and have had no leaks.

also, with doing the oilpan first, itll make sure your timing cover isnt slightly downward preventing your oilpan from sealing when you install it.

Centering it on the crank is what you want. The front seal is more critical than the pan

I alway put all the oil pan bolts in loose and get the timing cover on loose. Then install the crank pully. Torque the oil pan down, then torque the timing cover.

Install the front cover loosely, then install your balancer. This will center your timing cover Then torque it down to 18ft lbs. Then install your oil pan with the front edge flush with the edge of the timing cover. Then tq them 18ft lbs and the rear skinny bolts to 106in lbs. That works for me every time.

Balancer, cover, oil pan.
You want the front cover to be torqued/secured and centered over the balancer, first.
If not, those two bolts on the pan will exert a downward force on the cover.
Likewise for the rear cover, then oilpan.

+1 for cover, then pan. There is even a centering tool available if you're worried. Make sure you clean out the lower corners really well and use some sealer.

I always use J-41480 to flush the front cover with the oil pan matting surface. I then put the front cover bolts in finger tight and install the crank pulley. Then torque the front cover to spec. When you put the pan on use a dab of ultra black on the corners of both the front and rear cover.
