What in the hell happened here!!!!
my original shortblock took a crap a few months back and now i have a new one.so today i began disassembling the old engine and found something that didnt look quite right..actually not right at all...there were shavings all behind this plate.the retainer bolts were torqued to spec with red loctite.first thing came to mind was the cam was walking bolts all bolts were still tight when i began to disassemble.the cam is from comp and comp cams is local to me so i took it there today.several guys mic'd it and looked it over and the cam checked out fine and was to spec.he says my retainer bolts were hitting the gear on the backside..you can see the markings where it was hitting.but how can that happen when they were torqued and loctited and not backed out???????? would that really cause this damage or was he just throwing the problem on me?

if u cant tell the timing gear dug deep grooves in itself and the retainer plate also..stock timing set and stock bolts..guy at comp says i cant reuse stock cam bolts because they are TTY and they are stretched........hmmmm

you sure the cam retainer is stock?
could of been a new style cam retainer plate (which looks stock) but needs the new style counter sink bolts instead of the old bolts that cam with the engine..
what does the other side of the cam retainer plate look like? post a pic, if there is counter sink grooves in the bolt holes you have to have the proper bolts or else the will stick out and grind into your gear.

it was the STOCK 2000 retainer..the one i bought from the dealer today is the new style which requires the different bolts. i already boaght a new timing set from comp and the the retainer plate but i still want to know if anyone has a idea on what truly caused this as i dont want to ruin my new shortblock....

when i did the cam swap in march it was not like this.i did a heads and cam upgrade....put no more than 100 miles on the car and the bottom end developed a knock.been sitting since then and just now opened here up...something went wrong in that "100" miles i just can pinpoint what yet

You need to measure the end of the cam from the front ware it meats the cam gear to the bearing journal. I have had a cam the was machined incorrect and would lock the engine up when I torqued the cam bolts. I do understand that comp says the cam is in specs. but at the same time their stance of problems such as this is its never their fault. So if the only thing you changed is the cam and you reused the same timing set, bolts, retaining plate, than that only leaves one part.

Can't tell 100%,[without the parts]. But, from the looks of the depth of the rub marks on the gear,[Notice the difference in the "intensity"] and the discoloration on the area that the cam contacts, it looks like the cam gear was not flat on the end of the cam.....
