427 home built
I was wondering if anyone has tried to build a 427 after buying all the parts and haveing a machine shop balance all the parts? I am looking at doing this so any info would be appreciated

I am doing the same thing but with a 410ci
The only thing I am not doing is the machine work.
I am having a machine shop bore/hone, balance and assemble the shortblock
I would have a shop do that and then do all the little stuff yourself. I am paying about $750 for that. But some shops charge as high as $1000
and make sure and try to get everything brand new. I bought a used Lunati 408ci for $2,500 that was o-ringed and arp studs but a couple of pistons were bad so I had to buy new ones $700 plus new bearings and rings. I still got what I got for a hell of a deal since the block, rods, cranks, studs, oring were worth almost $4,000. Theres a lot to building a motor and you should do a search. Someone just put a post up of "all the little things they dont tell you"
a iron block stroker would be the cheaper way to go
since you would have to re-sleave your alum block

SStroked410's $700 for machining and assembly is in the ballpark for 4 places I have gotten quotes from here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I have found one shop that quoted around $500, and that is the lowest so far.
I am also one of the chumps wanting to use the "bargain" Eagle 4" cranks, so I am waiting for them to resolve their issues. If you didn't know, they have all been recalled, so everyone is waiting right now.
The Eagle cranks can be had from Spohn Performance for $820 + shipping. You can find Eagle rods for somewhere around $500 from a good many different sponsors, and I am choosing Diamonds off the shelf 4.125" -2cc pistons for around $600. Rings are about $180. The best bet may be to just call up someone like AP Engineering and buy their $2,500 rotating assembly fully balanced with bearings and all. It includes all the parts I mentioned.
You can send your block off to Steve of Race Engine Development and get it Darton sleeved, or you can buy one from another sponsor, usually they are around $2,500 as well.
So for $5,000 dead even you can have your rotating assembly and block, and depending on what shop you find, another $500-700 for machining and labor to put it together. Then grab yourself some headgaskets, slap on your favorite set of heads, choice of cam, and voila, a 427 F-body.
Of course, this is all on writing and on paper, and nothing ever goes like it's planned. UPS cracked my core block I sent to MTI, so I am already headed way over budget. But thats how it goes.
Remember you can subtract around $2000 if you throw out the entire Darton wet sleeved aluminum block and go with a $600 new iron block. Unless you are weight savings nut like me, since I auto-x and open track the car, go iron. A 408 iron block stroker will put down damn near the same numbers, and wont kill your wallet as much.

I also try to get the best deals. It gets expensive very FAST and dont forget heads, cam, headers ect. So far this is what I paid well around

$800+ for Diamond pistons, rings, h13 pins
$3,000 Stage 3 ported LS6 heads 2.08 1.60 ferera valves, comp 921 springs
$700 Kooks 1 7/8" race headers
$350 for custom cam
$700 machine work not done yet
$700 for misc stuff and rockers, lifters, pushrods, gaskets
so a total of around $8,750 **** I didnt know it was that high

Hey guys,I'm building an iron block stroker too,mostly gathering parts now. I called Mahle Pistons last week and they said they could sell pistons for 4.030 bore for 6.125 rod and 4.00 stroke pistons.pins,and rings for like$475.00.I know Mahles not real popular on here but they furnished the pistons in the GT Corvettes that ran the 24 hours at Daytona,They also do a lot of Indy and FORMULA cars,the pistons are also coated they're black?I think those two Corvettes finished 1st and 2nd at Daytona.Oh by the way they have 5cc .valve notches

Mahle has a website www.mahlemotorsports.com . They made the stock LS1 pistons. Since I work there I hope I can get a discount or a free set

What in the heck, not but 2 weeks ago I was quoted $2,500 dead even which included:

All pre-balanced and ready to throw into your short block. He also said with all the problems they are having with the Eagle cranks, they could substitute a Callies crank for something like 200-400 more, I forget exactly how much. The $3900 sounds like an entire iron block shortblock setup quote to me, not just the rotating assembly.

Ah then that would be the Lunati kit. This has been one of the only options for the longest time for us LS1 folks, their almost $4,000 super billet fancy rotating assembly. This was what the Eagle crank was supposed to do, give us an option for a cheaper crank. Mind you it's still not a $400 small block stroker crank, but $850 for the Eagle is a lot better than the $1,600 for the Lunati.
