Have a Degree wheel handy? Proper way to measure it is with crank degrees. There is slack and there is also stretch. If that is a new chain it is bound to stretch more within the first few hundred miles. Excessive timing chain slack will retard a camshaft. I cannot remember exact numbers but that is what is going on.

Measure in degrees the slack and report back. I can say that based on the video if there is more than 1/4" of movable slack then that is too much to start with; you have not even accounted for normal stretch of a new chain after install.

My new timing chain had about that much slack too. The ls motors tend to have more slack than the old school sbc's. I freaked out a little too when we installed mine, but thanks to good ole ls1tech, found thats normal.

Hope that helps

My brand new LS2 set was the same way, unfortunatly i think this is how they all are. Do yourself a favor, order the Trickflow timing chain damper and adapter bracket kit.
Its like $50 and the bracket attaches to the cam plate cover and you dont have to drill into your block. Thats what i did and i feel alot more comfortable having the damper there to deflect whatever slack in the chain

trickflow has a bracket that allows you to use the factory LS2 dampener....I planed on trying it out pretty soon.

That is the designed amount of slack ,,,,,,,,and is the same as every gen 1 small block I've ever seen . If there were no slack it would'nt take long to do 1 or both of 2 things . 1 it would stretch so much that there would be roughly that amount of slack and/or the chain would break .
As far as the dampener , You only need 1 if You're road racing and the engine is kept in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range for extended periods of time . In that rpm range somewhere the high frequency harmonics are t-chain killers .

This dampener must be new for 2012, I don't recall it existing last year.

Bought mine from TEA (Total Engine Airflow) they have the set for sale adapter/damper together instead of buying them individually... Paid $58 shipped! Thought about tapping block, but this will make it a little more worry-free.

Did the OP ever finish the motor and run it to see if the timing chain was good or not! I'm having the same problem with my brand new timing chain/gear/sprocket. I'm a little worried about it because I don't want to have to go back and do this again. I just went through a bunch of old threads about the same issue, but I just want to get one more confirmation.

Is this damper worth it I just put my motor back together is it worth tearing back down to install this?
