Default How many miles is too many to cam a LS1?

Hey all, Just picked up a 2004 GTO with 53,000 on the clock and have been thinking of doing a cam swap. I did this with my last 04 GTO that had 42K on it and wanted to get opinions on this. Last time I went with a "Sleeper" cam from Comp. 230/570 with a 114 LSA. Looking to go a little bigger this time, thinking 240/590 on a 110 LSA. Not a huge cam, but want a little more out of this one. Supporting mods would be Shorties, Catted Mids, CAI, Springs, Push Rods, Oil Pump, Timing Chain, and Dyno tune.

Thoughts?

Thanks guys, appreciate any and all input.
Oh, and I did do a search and did not find anything...

I dont think that 53000 would be anywhere remotely close to too many, but really it all depends on how the car was treated before you got it. Sounds like a great setup, although, we have alot of camshafts that would work great for your application.

What do you plan to do with the car?

I just did heads and cam on mine and it has 145,500. It always has, and still is, running strong. My compression is now at 11.7 as well.

Hey Jake, You may have been who helped me with my last "project" IIRC. This time the car was a single owner car prior to me that appears to be in really good shape. The car is my DD, however I only put about 300-500 miles a month on it. Just looking for a bit more then the last build. No doubt I will purchase from you guys again due to your excellent customer service!

I did the cam on my camaro at around 121k and its running great. Not to mention before I got it, it was practically married to the bottle. 53k is nothing.

I did a cam on mine at 65,000. 7,000 miles later a lifter craped out. Might wanna go ahead and change those out.

Did my cam at 103k and heads at 108k. Now at 130k and never a hiccup. Drove it daily for years!

53,000 is brand new in ls1 land!

I wouldnt be afraid to cam one with 200k if it still had good compression.

Installed one on my car at 110,000 and just turned 129k and we did a leak down over the weekend and it came back perfect and car feels like it's only got 10k on it. You take care of these motors and they will take care of you for a long time.

Go for it!!

I feel mileage is just a number which you can base some health of the engine off of it, but not entirely.

Personally I feel unless youre the origonal owner, you must be a little nieve to think an LS engine from a Vette or F-body has been "babied" for those 20K, 50K, or even 100K+ miles.

On a 50K miles engine I might NOT replace some of the common swapped items (timing chain, lifters, oil pump etc), but its your call ultimatly.

As long as the engine is healthy, there is "no mileage restriction". You can destory a lifter, spin a bearing etc in any engine.
