Default Build thoughts, lq9/with what heads

I'm building a "street" strip car ill drive it in town one or 2 nights a week maybe.
Car is a 91 bird gutted the weight should be around 3000-3200 I hope. Ill be running a th350 or 400 trans.
Current plans
Stock lq9 rotating assembly plus arp rod bolts.
Th-350/400 with a 3200-3600stall
4:10 gears
Vic jr carb intake
Holley 850 double pumper

I'm hoping for 500ish whp and low 11's or better. My question is this
I have a set of 862's, should I send them off and have them fully worked over(ai,prc etc) or should I go with some stock ls3s milled .030? Any cam recommendations for either setup? The heads are my hold up at the moment. Can't get a cam till I know what heads fit best.

With your small bore id stay away from ls3 heads

You are better off with a set of ported milled ls6 heads

Ls3 heads with your cubes plus u can't beat how they flow out of the box..also u will have more room in the future to grow if u decide to send the ls3 heads off

This is what's making it a difficult decision, it's almost always a 50/50 split lol.

Ls3 heads really need a 4.030+ bore to take advantage of the flow. The intake valve is up against the cylinder wall, PTV clearance suffers, and you dont have much room to mill for compression. Otherwise, im telling you (search and you will find out for yourself) you are better off sticking with a cathedral head

Stock 364 stay cathedral, 370, 376, or 408 move to a ls3/l92 head. On a 364 I don't think the low end or the HP numbers will be what you want.

I chose the Texas Speed CNC ported heads. They were only $1150 and flow as well as the LS3 heads. The advantage of these heads as well as the stock LQ9 heads are that you can run a pretty large cam without fly cutting. The LS3 heads require fly cutting with any cams mid 230@.050 or larger.

My car is 3700+lbs. with me in it and will go 11.40s with a small 2800 converter and a pretty small cam.

I would think the Texas Speed heads with one of their magic stick cams and a 4000 converter would get you in the 10s on a reasonable budget.

I'd use the stock 317's. Have them milled and fully cnc'd. A custom cam because just about any of the shelf cam's will not work well with A carb. Esp stay away from the magic stick cams with A carb.

It is all about the specs and an MS3 on a 111 LCA or similar grind would be a great choice.

You should post this in the Carb section:

I love the 64 442s. There is a 65 442 conversion on here that came out really nice. I can't remember his screen name.

As for buying a pair and then sending them off, I am not sure you will save any money that way. Texas Speed sells them cheap enough with no core that I doubt you could do better by buying a used set and then shipping and then the CNC work, guides, valve job etc.
