I agree, better pumps!
But what are your plans for the 5.3.

^^^ THIS!!

LS2 timing sets are too sloppy for my liking....I learned this after running one for 3k with the damper. I'll never use another one. Yeah the kit I use (C5R w/ hex-a-just from Cloyes) is pretty spendy, but it does the trick. I've never used any other pump than Katech, so can't really comment there.

The LS2 chain is ridiculously hit and miss. Mine was tight as hell, but I also spent the extra 15 or 20 bucks @ Yank and opted for the new billet timing gears. Maybe that helped?

I seriously wonder how much timing chain slack can be attributed to utilizing stock cam and crank gears. I'm not disputing ANYONE'S claim, as I've seen it posted here too many times to count. Just curious.

I would think minor slop would tighten up when the engine warmed up from thermal expansion.

Katech/IWIS C5-R Chain and Melling HV 10296 as previously said. Just use the lighter spring in the HV Melling pump and run 6 quarts and you'll be good to go.
