Default Which cam would you pick from these two?

226/230 .598/.609" 112LSA +4

or

231/238 .617"/.585" 113+3

My mods are 2002 Trans Am, M6
241 heads- will upgrade to AI 243's in the future
3:42 rear, stock 10 bolt-will also upgrade in future,
Fast 90/90-blackwing lid,85mm MAF
ARH 1 7/8 longtubes with catted y-pipe.

I had two cams spec'd and undecided which to go with. Any suggestions?

Why is that? What's the logic, just want to understand...

Cats do not like too much overlap. Choking point.

Gotcha. I wish I understood all this stuff. I am so undecided on cams. Only want to do this once. Don't really plan on doing any serious racing . Just want a fun street car with that strong muscle car sound and good performance.

226/230 would be my vote, probably has better low end if I had to guess...

Probably not more than a 10hp difference but both will drive nice and make power. I'd lean to the 231/238... Has more potential power once you do more mods and wouldn't give up much on drivability or torque.

Oh, I respect his thoughts 100%. I was actually going to pm him once to see if he would recommend me a grind. Just wanted some opinions. There are so many choices out there from so many vendors and grinds. I've been researching forever and listening to youtube videos and looking at graphs. My mind is racing right now. DECISIONS, DECISIONS!!!

Get the 2nd one.

Since you have the manual transmission... the additional duration ( actually its the earlier exhaust valve open point) will help the motor make more torque above peak but takes away some below... this is great for a manual car because the rpm fallback on the shifts is way less versus an automatic car. You are already above the rpms where the additional evo reduces torque and it will pull like crazy throught the midrage and into the upper range...

Add a 3.73 to your rear end upgrade and it only improves this situation.

If you stay with the 3.42 axle ratio, stick with the 226. That will be plenty big enough. The 231/239 will have more power @ says 5500 > 6500 but less on the low end.

If you go bigger, it will be a bucking beauty. Or like the other post says, 3.73's or even 4.11 gears.

Yeah, I plan on going with an S60 or a 9" in the future.(Whichever I can afford when the time comes). I will build the rear depending on whatever cam I have at the time, but I want to be able to enjoy my car until that time comes...

I personally would go with the smaller cam. I have a 228/232 cam and make 470whp and the power does not die until 6800. I am not looking to spin any higher than that so a bigger cam would just make me lose power under the curve, which is WAY underestimated with these cars. I have personally pulled big donkey dick cam LS1 cars with my baby cam on the top end before.

P.S. when you put gears in your car, don't go with anything longer than a 3.90 gear. I have 4.10s and still bog a bit coming out of the hole launching at 3500RPM with slipping the clutch a bit. I still get ~125 out of 4th so that is enough for me. Anything after that you are just looking for trouble.

I use a 226-230 from eps. Drive it a lot. Nice cam for a car that doesn't see the strip much and has a nice sound. Made good power to with lots of low end torq.

Do you have any idle clips or your car?

Hopefully the link is good. This is threw long tubes. Tsp y pipe and magnaflow car back. Stock heads. Geoff at eps tuned this car. It loped harder but he threw some extra timing on it to mellow it out.
