Default which head bolts?

I am putting new style (05) 243 heads on an older style (03) LQ9 block. Which head bolt style do I need? Early or late?

If it is in fact an 03 block you will need to purchase the early long and short bolt set. If 04 and newer they will be same length.

^You are exactly right. I have two shallow bolt holes in the block on each end

You need the early style bolts.

Don't forget to make a thread chaser with one of the old long head bolts, gotta make sure those holes are clean and coolant free to obtain a good clamp when torquing head bolts down bc you don't wanna hydrolock/break one...
