Default Heads cleaning

I've got 2 sets of heads to clean, one's going onto the motor I'm putting together (317s onto an LM7) and the 862s that came off the motor that I'll end up selling. I'm looking for an easy way to clean them- I'd like to just dunk them in something and come back to them with a toothbrush or wire brush or something. Simple Green and Purple Power both have disclaimers that they can eat aluminum, though. What did YOU use to clean up your used heads? I'm just looking to get at the carbon on the combustion chamber, some of the PCV oil in the intake volume, and some of the soot in the exhaust runners.

Thanks in advance!

I let the machine shop clean mine - it wasn't expensive as I recall.

I got a straightedge on them- as I recall, factory spec is .1mm over the length of the head or .08mm over a 6" length, and the head was well within specs. I was going to have them milled (and cleaned) if they needed it, but they don't, so I'm just looking to spend like $10 on cleaners or whatever and make them look prettier.

Brake kleen, brass/plastic bristle brush and some time...easier if you disassemble them.
