I used a hybrid of a 6inch gear puller with 4 inch gear puller arms attached on my main pully and then used a 2 jaw puller for the lower timing gear.
When you reinstall your new lower gear try heating it up to make it go on the crank snout a little easier. I did this and then butted up the old gear to the new one and tightened my old bolt down to seat the new gear. No problems at all.

Since you already have the crank pulley off(I guess?) you need to take care to find something solid for the puller screw to buck up against. I used a LARGE allen head cap screw on a couple of BIG flat washers. The flat washers need to be just slightly smaller than the OD of the crankshaft. The allen head cap screw forces the puller screw to be concentric with the crankshaft so the sprocket comes straight off when you torque down the puller screw.
