Default Weird lifter/valvetrain noise

Hey guys,

I just got back into the LS1 game with a 2001 SS that i bought from a member here on the board. I've been loving every second of it but for the last week or so its been developing a ticking noise coming primarily from the right/passenger side of the engine (valvetrain noise or possible bad lifter?). Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I figure i'd ask before i break something or do permanent damage. Here's a list of what is under the hood and a link to the video(hope it works) of the sound if it'll help...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et_VA...ature=youtu.be

-4cc Mahle Forged Piston/Ring kit - Stock bore
ARP Head studs
ARP Rod bolts
Patrick G Spec'd Cam - 238/244 .615/.612” 113LSA +2 advance - Comp XFI/XFI lobes
TFS 215 Heads - milled to 57cc w/upgraded springs & custom length 3/8" pushrods
.040" cometics - 11.8-1 static comp (with stock pistons, now have -4cc)
Custom tune
SLP ported Oil Pump
Double Roller Chain/Adj Sprocket
LS7 Lifters
ASP Pulley
42 lb Injectors
Pacesetter LT's
Custom (hacked) TSP ORY with magnaflow cats bolted in
3" Hooker Exhaust into CME
Removed AIR
Removed EGR
MSD Plugwires
NGK TR6 plugs

Again, i hope i'm just being paranoid but who knows...

Thanks for the input!

Mine sounded the same as well. Started making the sound while I was driving though, in a construction zone with no where to pull over. By the time I got it pulled aside it had shut itself down.
After tearing it down found that the lifter had spun 90 degrees in its bore. Lifter tray didn't crack, but was weak enough to let it spin. Destroyed the cam and bent a couple valves.
I'd suggest pinpointing the location with a stethoscope and go from there. Good luck

I wouldnt drive it, just need to tear into it and figure out what it is. Its easy enough to take the valve covers off and see if it something simple, or find out at that point if you have to tear further into it.

Thanks for the replies. i think ill tear in to the valve covers this weekend and see if there's anything obvious. Tearing into an LS is one of the few things that i haven't ever had to do to an f-body in the past. Guess i wasn't running a big enough shot on my previous rides.....

Wow that's pretty loud, I thought the ticking noise I had was bad.

You have to listen pretty close to hear it. Click on image.

Similar sound as mine, yours is a bit louder. I'm tearing into mine soon and replacing the oem lifters with Morels/changing cam/FAST 92. Might as well if I'm going in there already. My car also seems to drive fine, with great oil pressure. Keep us updated with your findings.

You all are scaring the s%^t out of me. Everyday someone complains about lifters ticking and tearing up their motors. I bought LS2 trays to use with my lifters but I've been thinking bout breaking down and getting the morels..

I have never had to open an LS1 before but i do consider myself pretty technically adept, so other than head gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, lifters and trays, what else will need to be replaced? Also, with head studs can i still get the heads off the car without removing the engine? Im sure there will be more questions to come....Thanks again

Before my car was tuned, I babied the hell out of it. It has hit the limiter when the slip code came on and put the car in limp mode but the car was tuned before that happened.
