Default Is it worth to only polish the heads? (No porting)

I have a set of 862 heads that have a lot of carbon build up and other crap and I was thinking of giving it good polish to get rid of it and the casting marks. I don't want to take any material away in terms of porting, just smooth out all the surfaces. Would there be any gain to that vs leaving it alone? Just wondering

Knocking any high casting marks off will give a negligible gain. "Polishing" in its actual sense is bad for basically everything except the exhaust port. In the exhaust port it helps with carbon buildup. In the intake port you'll hurt your fuel atomization. In the combustion chamber if bad enough you'll hurt your compression and chamber dynamics.

I have the 862 heads that have been ported and polished by Texas Speed. From my understanding these particular heads don't offer much at all unless ported

You don't want to polish your intake runner to a mirror like finish. That doesn't help with atomization of the air/fuel mixture. You want some sort of rough finish for that to happen properly, which is why you see all the porting jobs having "layers" in order to give it that rough feel.

The exhaust port yes you can polish the heck out of it and should help a little big, but not the intake side. Either port it or leave it stock.

Thanks guys for the advice. I will most likely clean up the intake and polish the exhaust
