Default camshaft choice and install

I hae a 2000 TA that is basically stock and I am ready to jump in head first into modding and begin with an upgraded cam. I must admit that I am new to the whole internal engine workings so I will be getting everything installed. I have a few questions on the topic:

1. What cam is the most popular foe the ls-1?
2. What HP gain could I expect?
3. What other parts will I need to upgrade for the mod or can I just add the cam?

Thanks

It depends on what you want to do. How drivable do you want it to be? Whatother mods do you plan on doing? Do you have to pass emissions?

It is an incredibly arguable question. Personally, I'm not a fan of the high duration cams for the average guy just looking to have fun. I would recommend a TR224 or similar duration camshaft.

like everyone says its up to your likes... i just ordered the TSP 231/237 598/595 cam..and from what i hear you won't regret it...my friend jus installed his with some lt's and damn his car sounds like a beast and pulls like a ****...if your not to worried about smog...its a great cam...dyno #'s were printed a while back from jason.. with that same cam with stock heads and lt's headers and it dyno at 408hp to the rear...and its pretty good for a daily driver...my car is and my buddy's is too...it runs fine so far with no probs...but it all depends on you...do u want a calm or crazy sounding car and idle...go to ls1howto.com it tells you everything about cams from how to pick one and read them to how to install them

ok..it seems as though I have left out the most important part...this car is my daily driver...and I do have to pass emissions. I obviousxly want it as aggressive as possible and still retain these req. I will be adding a GMMG exhaust and other engine mods, but I just want the min req for the cam now.

thanks

Once again, it depends. You're going to have to stick to a 224 or lower duration to pass emissions and you'll need a good tuner.

Will I need anything additional for the install (ie more upgraded parts that go with the cam?)

thanks

Stock pushrods are fine. You'll need new valvesprings. Common choice is Comp 26918-16.

I would highly recomend hardened pushrods, good peice of mind parts, especially if you are revving over 6200.

im assuming this is an m6 car? I think your leaving a ton of power on the table by not going with headers...you might be satistifed sound/power wise at this point just with the bolt on route to be honest...there are plenty of m6 cars in the 11's just with bolt ons...if you jump into a cam your not gonna pick up that much with a relatively stock exhaust JMHO.

I'm still against hardened pushrods on stock motors. A pushrod is a cheap an easy fix. If the pushrod doesn't bend, you place the stress on the lifter and the valve stem.

So it sounds like you are saying to keep the pushrods as the weak point on purpose, am I understanding you correctly?

That sounds like a good idea. Protect those expensive heads with a cheaper part that will break first. Kinda like a fuse.

how strict are georgia emissions? All of my G5X2 and X3 customers pass emissions here and most dont have cats... but all they do for us is scan the OBDII ECU for codes, and if none are thrown we pass...
