Re: need advice on cam w/ 5.3 truck heads!!
I have those heads on my TA. Below is the numbers:
@.200” 138 121
@.300” 201 160
@.400” 251 230
@.500” 284 260
@.550” 295 265
@.600” 300 270
I guess my heads would be considered "Stage 1.5"
They have Ferrea 2.02 intake valves and stock 1.55" exhaust valves.
The nice thing about getting the TEA 5.3L heads is that you will start out with brand new, never run GM heads with those "cherry" new valve guides.
As you can see, they flow extremely well on the exhaust side. A cam with greater intake duration than exhaust [may] be the trick to a few more ponies, since the exhaust allready flow so well. I am just using a mild TR-220 cam and a set of FLP LTs with cats, so I am not getting the full potential from the heads, but it makes for a really nice daily driver and GREAT throttle response. I'm very happy with those heads.
BTW, TEA will remove material in the heads combustion chambers in order to unshroud the valves, so you end up with about 63cc chambers. This will yield a 10.7 to 10.8-1 CR. In my opinion, just about right for pump gas. This is with only .003" shaved from the head deck to insure straightness.
