Hey, i am about to take my 2000 LS1 the machine shop. Found my piston slap problem on the no.1 piston. The skirt was really obviously worn. I am going to have them tell me what the best way to go after they check it out. I was just wondering if spending the extra $275 for balancing the assembly, either stock or new pistons was actually needed turning prolly 68-7k. Thanks

Some measurements will have to be taken on the block bore after honing for roundness and cylinder desired volume.
Then but a set of matching rod/pistons/rings kit. Then you put it all together.

 

If stock pistons are going back in, or if the new pistons weigh the same as stock, then I wouldn't worry about balancing it.

 

I dont plan on getting a whole rotating assm. Just having the machine shop check the bore and see if what i have is still within spec. When i pulled the heads there was major major crap all over the top of the pistons and oil in the intake. I have read that the slag on the pistons can contribute to the piston rocking in the bore. True? I have also read that the pistons can be moved around in different bores to get a beter fit. True? I just want to put this thing back together with new bearrings for my DD. I need it to drive. Next question: i want to do rings as well, i see rings that have steel top rings that are more $, whats the benefit of them? Thanks

 

In your case, if you're re using factory stuff, balancing would only help stability. Not balancing it won't hurt, but neither will balancing.
